The most important role of a tutor is to foster both understanding and confidence. That means not only explaining content clearly but also encouraging curiosity, building trust, and providing strategies for independent learning. A tutor should adapt to each student's pace, listen actively, and create a supportive environment where mistakes are…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them with the skills and confidence to become independent learners. This involves not only imparting knowledge but also teaching critical thinking skills, problem-solving strategies, and effective study habits that will serve them beyond the tutoring sessions. I may excel at…

A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

I think the important thing for a tutor is to be clear in their concepts so that they can explain and teach their student in a clear and understanding way. As a tutor you need to make sure you test the student so that you know where they stand and then start from there. Evaluating the progress is just as essential. I consider myself a well…

For me, the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be there and help the student when he/she has some difficulties with his/her studies. Trying to find the best way to explain the topic or lesson and make it understandable. Also, establishing contact with the student is extremely important to make him/her feels comfortable and…

Personal relationships can form foundational to student success. Tutors can customize the lessons and activities according to students understanding. As for me, the most crucial thing should be improving their academic performances while arousing their interest in studying. To be specific, these are what I consider responsible tutorial behaviors. 1. Do sufficient pre-class preparation and make notes for every key point that you are going to talk about in detail. 2. Be patient in class. Think…

To me the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate, dedicated, understanding and patient. We need to be able to relate to how the students feels to truly be able to guide them at their own pace of learning. Being impatient and giving up on students will only lower the motivation and self-confidence of the student,…

Aside from helping students understand new concepts and develop practical academic skills, I believe the most important thing I can do as a tutor is to inspire them to change their perspective on learning. I believe that a tutor should be friendly with the student so that the student can freely discuss the problems with his/her tutor. The tutor can use interesting techniques to describe the concepts which will increase the concentration of the student and also his/her eagerness to learn. Again asking the student questions about the topic can help…

Good tutors should be able to help students improve and not dependent on them, they should be able to help a student solve problems and not simply giving them answers. In addition, tutors also have to be patient as not all students have the same learning abilities. Lastly, I think a tutor should put in the effort to understand both the materials…

I feel that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to act as a source of information throughout their time of studying. School can be, and often is, stressful, even if you love the subjects being taught and the teachers teaching them. Therefore, I think the role of a tutor hinges largely on offering support and passing on…

I think understanding the student's capacity, strengths, and weaknesses plays a vital role in being a tutor, therefore, the tutor could implement a personalized system for each student. Allowing the students to display the knowledge they have learnt is important to ensure that they indeed have learnt. There is always a chance the student just says they are fine with the content in the rush to move on, but giving them the time to explain what they have learnt will ensure the session has been effective. My patience gives the…

They should be patient according to the student's needs, while also being accommodating yet pushing them to continue learning to the best of their ability. I think if a tutor truly understands how each student learns best whether through visual aids, discussion, or practice they can adapt their approach to make learning more engaging and effective. A good tutor doesn't just teach the material; they help the student build confidence, curiosity, and independence in their learning. My strengths as a…

Inside Clifton HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Amber revised the quadratic formula and how to use the discriminant to determine the nature of roots, then practiced applying these skills to worded problems.

For Year 11, Olivia focused on factorising cubic polynomials as well as reviewing errors from her recent test using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ethan tackled logarithms and converting numbers to significant figures, with a focus on interpreting exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 maths, one student often skipped showing working for algebra and graphing questions—"she tried to do it all in her head," a tutor observed, which led to hidden sign errors that took time to find.

A Year 11 student tended to rush through extended response problems, not checking answers or units, so minor mistakes crept into exam-style practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student regularly doubted his answers and avoided attempting unfamiliar tasks unless shown an example first; this hesitancy slowed progress with fractions and statistics, leaving him uncertain about next steps when working alone.

Recent Achievements

One Clifton Hill tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking for help—now, he actively requests clarification when stuck, even asking for instructions to be repeated until he's sure, instead of waiting passively.

In senior English, another high schooler brought a list of specific questions she'd struggled with and worked through each one independently, showing far more ownership over her learning than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was initially reluctant about long division ended up finishing challenging multiplication problems with 7s, 8s, and 9s quickly and accurately by the end of the session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Clifton Hill Primary School.
