The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there with them, really listening and understanding. When we connect on a personal level and show genuine interest, it sparks their curiosity and makes them want to learn more. As a tutor, my goal is to light that fire within them, to make them excited about the subject and eager to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and recognise the issues that the student is facing and guide them through the same. I am a patient and a perceptive person. Being a student myself, I believe I can understand the problems and the emotions that students and children face nowadays. My listening skills and my…

Building confidence is the best thing a tutor can do for a student. Students may need tutors because they don't enjoy the subject, they find it hard, they do poorly, or all of the above. The tutors' role is to be the balance between a teacher and a friend. Helping them understand the questions they have in a relaxed environment is a good way to…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

I believe that a good tutor has the the ability to help students build confidence for the classroom, and inspire them to be the best that they can be. Another thing that is important to me is not belittling the student or making them feel "stupid" for not understanding, but instead relating to them and helping them find a different way to solve…

I believe a good tutor has the ability to transcend their role as a tutor and become a role model for their students. Further, helping a student overcome their fears or challenges for a particular subject is incredibly helpful. I am able to connect with my students and understand their issues from their perspective. This allows me to curate my…

Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think that fear of failure is one of the big issues in learning, because if you are scared to try something even if you're unsure, you'll never be able to learn and succeed. The key for a good teaching skill is patience, which I am really confident to have. For a tutor, the most important thing is to increase the curiosity of the student, for the subject that they are learning. Exams are important. However, at the end of the day I believe, the knowledge gained through the subject matter is far more important because it is something that can help to shape the future of the student. For example,…

A tutor provides a student with the platform to perform at their highest academic potential. This is achieved by ensuring a student has an adequate understanding of key concepts and the targeted material to practice those concepts in an exam environment. The important difference between a tutor and a teacher is that a student gives a student the…

A tutor should focus on empowering the student, rather than simply teaching the content to them, so that when the tutor is not present, the student is still able to motivate themselves and have confidence in their ability without having someone to rely on. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is teach them how to teach themselves. While teaching the area of study is a crucial part of tutoring I believe that it's even more important for students to learn how to study at home, in a way that helps them retain the information and is also tailored to their preferred learning style. Local Reviews

It is only one week since we commenced Grade 6 maths tutoring but so far I have been extremely happy with the overall service, communication levels, speed of commencement and we now have a lovely tutor that I think my daughter will enjoy working with on a weekly basis.
Shelley Barrett, Coburg

Inside Coburg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Sarah focused on phonics and common spelling words, practicing through reading exercises.

For Year 11, Michael worked on applying Newton's laws to cars with trailers involving friction, as well as inclined plane calculations using F=ma.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Alex explored electromagnetic fields—covering ratios, dot and cross products—and extended this into Lenz's and Faraday's laws by analyzing flux changes using diagrams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Physics, Erin's exam and SAC performance has often been affected by time management and confidence when translating worded problems into equations—one session noted, "she wasn't fully able to answer a 3-mark written response about Air resistance…and seemed a little rattled."

Calculator entry errors have also recurred, with correct formulas but inaccurate final answers.

Earlier in the year, she occasionally arrived without worked homework questions due to organization lapses.

In contrast, a Year 4 student's work revealed frequent issues with handwriting clarity and layout when tackling Venn diagrams or reading comprehension tasks, making their reasoning difficult to follow during review.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coburg North noticed a high school student who, after previously losing marks to small errors and timing issues on her SACs, now confidently explains her maths reasoning out loud and has started critiquing and defending her solutions—something she used to avoid.

Another older student recently took the lead in sessions by setting the agenda herself, bringing up integrals and wave problems she wanted help with, showing a new level of independence compared to waiting for guidance.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once rushed through reading is now pausing to sound out words before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Preston Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mercy College.
