I wish to inspire all my students to critically think and problem solve. Not just to pass their exams or tests, but to apply these skills to their everyday lives. With the state the world is moving, I believe it is necessary students question what they are told so that they can do their own research and come to their own conclusions. 1) Multimodal…

I believe it is the tutor's job to tailor the lessons and concepts to each individual student. In addition to teaching to the student's weaknesses, the tutor must make connections to the student's interests. The tutor should also recognise and minimise the student's weaknesses. Most importantly, the tutor's primary responsibility is to equip the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is not only understanding the students well, but also knowing how much the student knows, and being able to convey lessons well. Patience and perseverance with students. Ability to understand the needs of different types of students and handle them…

Some of the most important things a student can gain from having a tutor would be to build up their confidence in a certain subject, by providing specialised teaching and education for that specific student, to increase their understanding. A tutor would also provide a different perspective of difficult concepts, being seperated from the…

Being understanding. Everyone learns and does everything at their own rate, I believe tutors need to understand when to adapt what teaching method with their student and when to switch techniques. By being a student myself I understand how to connect with a student and teach in various ways, allowing for an adaptive teaching…

Tutor-student connection. If the pair don't maintain an almost friends connection it is hard to influence the students learning for the better. I understand the frustrations that come with the failures in teaching, and I can successfully help students overcome that, as well as I know how to adapt my teaching style to better benefit the…

Help students to help themselves by scaffolding their learning and building their confidence. Gives more confidence and patience, in explainng the concept of maths to the student. Cheer the students in a good way upon solving the given question. From my experience, the desire to learn and succeed must come from within, but once that feeling is there it is the tutor's responsibility to cultivate and grow this passion and to translate it into continuous improvement. Hence, one of the most important things that a tutor can do is understand the student's needs and to meet those needs in a…

I want to ensure that the student feels comfortable, and I want them to speak up when any concerns arise. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the subject itself, and the skills it requires, as this is what seems to be holding back most students from achieving good grades. The most important thing is to motivate to them so that they want to learn, instead of thinking that studying is just for the sake of having good results in school. I've found in my experience that students often lack self confidence, they are extremely capable but feel as though they can't take the problem. Inside CockburnTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Chloe worked on finding area and perimeter of squares and rectangles, using diagrams to help visualise measurement.

In Year 9, Aiden explored narrative analysis in English by breaking down literary devices like metaphor and allusion, as well as practising persuasive writing techniques such as emotive language and anecdote in preparation for assessments.

For Year 10 maths, Lucas revised solving linear inequalities and graphing their solutions, alongside work on simultaneous equations with substitution and elimination methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student did not finish their novel before the deadline and struggled to recall key details when questioned; "he needs to reread the ending until he can more effectively comprehend it."

In Year 11 Legal Studies, another was reluctant to attempt questions with unfamiliar wording unless prompted, avoiding independent problem-solving.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student repeatedly left homework incomplete due to confusion and did not attempt tasks without immediate support. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and practice—questions went unanswered, and confidence faltered when faced with new or challenging material.

Recent Achievements

One Cockburn tutor recently noticed a big turnaround for Caitlin in maths: after re-trying her previous assessment, she answered every question correctly, showing real persistence where she'd struggled before.

In Year 10, Nikita flagged tricky finance problems herself during the session instead of waiting passively—she then worked through how payment plans add extra costs and could explain her reasoning back to the tutor.

Meanwhile, Aiden (Year 9) started building a steady reading habit by completing all set chapters for English ahead of time and took initiative to research evidence for his persuasive essay without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Success Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College WA (Cockburn).
