My greatest asset as a tutor would be my ability to really zone in on any problems a student may have in particular. This comes from being able to put yourself in their position before answering their questions and trying to be as tailored to every students learning ability. Also to be highly motivated to impact the greater good which will be…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is improve their confidence in their academic ability and give them strategies that will help them throughout the rest of their schooling career. I believe my strengths as a tutor include explaining concepts in a way that is easy to grasp, creating lessons that suit the individual’s learning…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

A tutor should be well-prepared in ensuring students completely comprehend subject that is being taught. A tutor should be prepared to answer all sorts of question asked by the students. An excellent tutor should be genuinely interested in the students understanding. He/she should not be afraid to acknowledge anything they do not know. Instead,…

A tutor should build confidence, not just improve marks. It’s important to create a safe space where students can ask questions without fear, explain concepts clearly, and encourage independent thinking. Consistency, encouragement, and understanding each student’s learning style are key. My biggest strengths are patience and clear explanation.…

Any tutor needs to know that learning can't be forced. What's important is for us to help them to ignite the flames of passion to learn a subject through a fun and interactive session. Furthermore, applications in the real world of the various concepts the students are learning are incredibly valuable, as it gives them a greater sense of purpose, knowing well what they are studying is not just to tick the…

They must be able to relate to the student's situation and current understanding of topics/content. This is the only way tutors can identify what student's need to work and create methods for them to see real improvement. I think for a tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to keep…

Lisa, Coogee

Inside CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Robbie focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, then compared different fraction values using visual aids.

In Year 10, Claire worked through compound and simple interest calculations as well as interpreting compounded value tables for financial maths topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex explored the declining-balance method of depreciation and reducing-balance loans, with practical examples to deepen understanding of financial mathematics concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student's test performance revealed persistent timing issues—"still struggling to complete tests in the correct time frame"—with rushed endings leading to unfinished questions in algebra.

For Year 11 Physics, forgotten content after missed sessions resulted in gaps that "couldn't be covered quickly before the test," causing anxiety and confusion.

In Year 6 Maths, unorganized note-taking meant key formulas were missing when revising fractions.

Another senior student hesitated to write working out for worded problems: "He holds back in case he gets an answer wrong," so mistakes remained hidden and feedback couldn't be used effectively.

Recent Achievements

One Coogee tutor recently saw a Year 9 student, previously hesitant to ask for help, now actively seeking clarification whenever confused—a big change from just nodding along in earlier sessions.

A Year 11 student has started fixing mistakes independently after only one correction, where before he would repeat the same error several times.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to stumble over times tables is now recalling them more smoothly each week and even completed a new set without prompts during their last session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Brigid's Catholic Primary School.
