The most important thing for a tutor is that they further the learning and understanding of their student. An important role of the tutor to do this is to assist the student to learn in a way they can understand. I believe that the tutor should make it easier for the student to learn the fundamental concepts. I have a strong understanding of core…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are: 1) provide clarity, 2) build confidence, and 3) foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn't just help students get the right answers, they help students understand the process and develop the skills to tackle future challenges on their own. Encouraging students to ask questions, think…

A good tutor can change the student's mindset and make them better people. Having a good tutor makes the subject automatically interesting and students tend to invest more time and put more effort into it. I am a very patient and dedicated person. Also, I like to make sure that every person/student I teach, understands everything thoroughly. I try…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Additionally, making sure the student is comfortable enough to share what they do not understand or to feedback on what…

the most important things a tutor can do for a student is uplift them knowledge wise as well as in person. To give them knowledge while instilling good habits and ethics. To make them grow into a better version of themselves. I'm good at keeping the class knowledgeable yet interesting at the same time. I have a sharp eye, so it is easier for me to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are making a student feel safe enough to say 'I don't understand,' and building their confidence alongside their skills. So many students fall behind simply because they're too embarrassed to ask questions, so creating a judgment free and supportive environment is everything. From there, it's about…

Impart upon a student not knowledge per se, but rather a desire to expand their own knowledge through self-directed learning. Learning and education should be a lifelong process, not one that ends when an individual completes their primary vocational education. Learning makes us grow and develop and look at things in different ways, and the desire…

The first important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them confidence that they can do it. Everyone has the potential to succeed academically and as a tutor, I will encourage my students to always do their best. This is because, at the end of any tests/exams, the students will be relieved knowing that they have given their best through…

To help the student form a routine and improve performance in the school. Teaching the skill of learning and eventually working towards independence is very important to me. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. Listening to them and understanding their point of view when something seems difficult for them, even when it isn't really from my perspective. Then combatting this problem by exploring different ways to present a difficult concept. I do this using analogies and using simple…

The most important thing is to create a environment in which the student is not afraid to ask questions and in which every question is considered important. Essentially the most important thing is for the tutor to give the student a positive experience with learning. I believe this is more valuable than the academic lesson learnt, because it reinforces an eagerness to engage in learning which they can carry throughout their entirelives (since they come to associate learning with positive experiences…

The ability to explain concepts and solutions to problems in a way that the student can understand. What can look very simple to us can seem like a foreign language to our students, so the skill to break these down and make the student believe that what just looked impossible to them is actually very doable is invaluable as a tutor. I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

Inside CoolbiniaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Olivia worked on calculating area of various shapes and finding equivalent fractions using diagrams.

In Year 8, Ben focused on expanding and factorising algebraic expressions, as well as converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages through targeted exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Zoe practiced solving equations involving rational and irrational numbers and reinforced her understanding of index laws with mixed review questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided error-checking in algebra tasks—"back checking to make sure she hasn't made an error" was missing, leading to small mistakes carrying through final answers.

In Year 10 Chemistry, revision focused only on recent material; older test topics were left unreviewed, which meant key terms from last year ("just going over last year's definitions and concepts") were forgotten during practice questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student hesitated to attempt challenging maths word problems when unsure of vocabulary like "discount," often leaving these blank rather than risk a wrong answer. Confidence dropped after errors, slowing progress mid-session.

Recent Achievements

One Coolbinia tutor recently saw a Year 10 student, Abbey, begin to tackle tricky chemistry formulas with far less hesitation—by the end of the session, she was confidently using new notation that had previously tripped her up.

In Year 8 maths, Piper started pointing out her own errors before the tutor noticed them and now asks clarifying questions instead of staying silent when unsure, which is a real shift from her earlier sessions.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Jacinta wrote a much more detailed body paragraph for her recount assignment than she managed last term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Dianella Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coolbinia Primary School.
