I think a physics tutor should create a comfortable environment where students feel confident asking questions without worrying about making mistakes. Beyond improving marks, a tutor should help students understand the reasoning behind problems so they can apply what they've learned independently. I think I'm patient and good at explaining…

I believe the most important things a physics tutor can do for their students is to support them in their way of learning while also offering alternative study methods that may help them to better understand a concept. By doing this, a tutor can assist the student the best they can while also challenging the student to try something new and…

Identify and fill in gaps in the students knowledge and skills; equip them with the confidence and skills they need to approach new problems on their own. I am a careful observer of students as they work; I have a belief that every student can succeed; I have a gentle manner and am very patient; I am able to approach concepts in many different…

I think as a physics tutor it is important to make sure your students feel safe and supported at all times. It is also important to not belittle students but rather always encourage them no matter what. Teaching students how to eventually become independent learners is also very important. I think my strengths as a tutor are my solid foundation…

To build intrinsic motivation. How much they value their success is up to them but their enjoyment of studying as well as how effective they are at studying are things that I can affect. This can ensure that they see long term success. I try to be as patient as possible; I'm someone who takes longer to process some concepts and I so I know how…

Aside from teaching them the class materials, I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do for their student is to give them the confidence to face their fears and problems. I believe motivating them to reach their goals and helping them recognize their strengths and weakness would positively affect them in school and life. My strength…

Confidence. A great tutor doesn't just teach the subject, they help the student believe they can master it. That shift in mindset is what drives real progress. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear way. Because I'm studying mechanical engineering, I had to learn how to break down difficult…

I consider a physics tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor…

I think the most important things a physics tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, explain concepts clearly, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. A good tutor should not simply give answers, but guide students to understand the method, recognise patterns and become more confident in approaching new questions. It…

It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

One of the most important things a physics tutor can do for a student is provide a structured learning environment. Often, the biggest source of exam-related stress is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material and not seeing the connections between topics. A tutor should help students make sense of this by summarizing key concepts and looking…

It is important for tutors to explain the concept in a way that gives the student true understanding rather than just a shortcut for test questions. I'm…

The tutor should understand his subject matter to be able to deliver complicated ideas to the students simply and concisely. If the tutor cannot do so, he should further his knowledge of that subject matter. I love to use descriptive and outside the box methods to understand mathematical concepts. Inside CottesloeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Chloe practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and tackled worded percentage problems using real-life discount scenarios.

Year 9 student Lachlan worked on sketching linear equations by creating tables of values and identifying gradients and intercepts, then moved to distinguishing between parallel and perpendicular lines on graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia explored solving quadratic equations using factorisation and the quadratic formula, with extra focus on recognising turning points and sketching parabolas accurately from given equations.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students repeatedly did not complete homework, as seen in Years 9 and 11 ("Did not complete homework, needs to complete at least the minimum amount"), which limited class time for deeper practice.

In Year 10 algebra, working out was often messy or skipped entirely—"notation and setting out needs significant improvement"—making it difficult to spot errors or understand steps.

One Year 8 student consistently tried to solve problems in her head rather than writing out calculations, leading to confusion when tackling multi-step word problems.

During a Year 12 lesson, "sketching was rough…needs to work on doing her sketching as neat and accurate as possible," so graph interpretation suffered under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Cottesloe tutoring session saw a Year 11 student who previously rushed through problems begin to slow down and check her answers for sense, catching errors before they became habits.

A Year 8 student who used to hesitate when faced with worded percentage problems is now breaking them into key steps independently and showing her working clearly without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 has started attempting every maths question on her own first—something she avoided last term—and only asks the tutor for help after giving it a real try herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like North Cottesloe Primary School.
