I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is break the subject down as much as possible and really ensure that they understand in their own way before moving on to the next thing. I am very patient and able to explain a concept in several different ways. I also am very knowledgeable and have my own study tools I can apply with…

A tutor should be able to allow the student to understand the concept with a good amount of familiarity. This involves repetition and testing of students' understanding using different methods. When concepts are difficult, a tutor should be able to simplify the concept such that all students understand it with clarity. I am very patient and quick…

The most important thing that a tutor can provide their student is building a good relationship of trust with them so they can then learn concepts they are struggling with in a fun and supportive environment. My biggest strength as a tutor is definitely being able to relate to how the kids are trying to understand certain concepts. I was a student…

Helping students understand their topics rather than having them "parrot learn" their topics is vital. A basic understanding of the various topics is vital as progression and improvement in results will be limited if this understanding is not occurring. If a student does not enjoy the subject you are tutoring, I see it as very important to…

Build confidence and independence, not dependence. A good tutor doesn't just hand over answers they teach the student how to think through a problem, so that in the exam room, alone, the student can do it themselves. That means diagnosing the real gap (it's often two topics earlier than where the student thinks they're stuck), explaining it in…

I believe that student's can generally pick up on whether a tutor is invested in them quite quickly. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is actively show them that they do in fact want them, as an individual, to do better than they've ever done before and show interest in them as a person. I am very good at picking up on what…

To be able to build a personal relationship with the student where the student is comfortable to ask questions as to what they don't understand, and be able to answer them clearly and patiently. I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. As such, I feel like getting rid of these blocks by showing students that even…

As a requirement to be able to teach college physics, I had to take a course in teaching etiquette where we were required to submit a teaching statement for our final grade. I think that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student would be to always be there for them when they have questions to ask. This is because with our presence, and once we manage to build a relationship with them, they would not feel that it is embarrassing to ask certain questions, even if they have a wrong answer in mind. Inside CrawleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tanisha focused on trigonometric functions, specifically working through where and why she finds these challenging.

In Year 10, Chloe prepared for an upcoming Matrices test by tackling matrix operations and understanding adjacency matrices as used in different graph types.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sofia practised addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers along with revision of multiplication tables for improved number fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often avoided writing out steps when tackling equations, preferring to "solve in his mind"—this led to confusion and errors, especially as problems became more complex.

In Year 11 English, another student struggled with essay planning and left arguments underdeveloped; a tutor noted, "he needs more practice in forming concise points which support his argument."

Meanwhile, in Year 6 Maths, a student was quick to use the calculator before attempting questions independently. These habits resulted in lost marks or incomplete understanding during assessments, causing visible frustration and dented confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Crawley tutor recently saw Chloe, a high school student, start making her own summary notes during lessons—she'd previously relied only on verbal explanations, but now refers back to her written notes when tackling practice problems in Matrices.

In another session, Gabriel, also in high school, showed a shift by recalling formulas for area and volume from memory without prompts; earlier sessions had him frequently pausing to check or ask for reminders.

Meanwhile, Flynn (Year 6) moved from needing step-by-step help with rearranging equations to working through hypotenuse problems independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
