Make them feel capable and competent no matter how difficult they may find the subject. Help them know and feel that the hard work will pay off and be worth the effort. Recognising that each individual needs help in different areas as well as learning in different ways sometimes not the standard teaching method works for every student and a…

I think one of the most important thing a tutor does for their student is to build up their confidence for a topic they are not comfortable with and helping them become overcome whatever struggles they face in the subject. My strengths as a tutor is the fact that I can adapt my way of teaching that will suit each student, because not all students…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is to not only develop the student's understanding of the content, but also to develop their self-efficacy and facilitate their own ability to analyze and break down tough concepts independently, as I think this is a skill that will continue to serve them far into the future. I think that I'm…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen, and to be a pillar of support they can lean on not only in their academics, but also in their personal lives. High school can be a really stressful period for students, not only in the immense pressure that students are under but also with the dramatic shifts their minds…

The most important things are: 1. Provide an environment where genuine learning is encouraged. 2. Provide an environment to enjoy what you do so that it provides the motivation for the student to succeed. 3. Act as a coach / mentor for the student rather than as a teacher. 4. Tailor your approach so that it matches the student's learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is that they can truly understand the student's problem and help in a way best suited for the individual instead of a generic method. They should also assist the student and not add to their difficulty in understanding the topic. My strengths are that I am a good listener and can articulate my…

I think a tutor’s responsibility is to ensure a foundational level of understanding is reached and giving the student a space to ask questions they may not in class. I am able to think about things in different ways and recognise when something isn’t working for someone. I don’t over complicate things. I believe that explaining difficult…

Teaching them how to be diligent and act responsibly with everything in life. For me personally teaching isn't just cramming information inside a student's head, it's about inspiring them to improve themselves and helping them realise that the only way to change their grades is to change their attitude towards studying. My strengths are…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to boost their confidence. This boost in confidence will increase the student's self-esteem and, consequently, will help improve their grades. If a student can finish a session with a smile on their face and the confidence that they understand the concept, the session was very…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to fully understand the needs and wants of a student within their specific subject and in life. By understanding this, tutors can create an environment that will best suit the student, allowing enhanced performance and enjoyment within their subjects. This can be done by simply engaging in normal…

I believe an essential aspect to include in tutoring is helping students to develop metacognitive and study skills. In mainstream education, the uniqueness of student learning processes is often neglected. Every child is unique, so he/she has to be dealt with and moulded accordingly. The greatest thing in my eyes that a tutor can do for a student is listening to the student requirements as to what or where he/she needs special attention, or what he is grabbing or not. The greatest asset to this is communication, a student can only open his/her heart…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel confident in themselves. Teaching content is part of it, but guiding them to believe they can tackle challenges on their own is even more important. A tutor should help a student enjoy and thrive in a subject without making the work feel overbearing or unwelcoming. They should work to help the student succeed and enjoy the subject they are teaching. I am very patient and can be very firm when I need to be. I believe that every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching style to suit…

Inside Croydon SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Gabriella focused on factorising and solving quadratic equations, as well as revising linear equations and exploring turning point form in preparation for upcoming assessments.

For Year 8, Ava worked through fraction operations and tackled problems involving positive and negative integers using written steps to clarify each part of her process.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Gabby spent recent sessions reviewing differentiation basics and practising methods such as the quotient rule and product rule with targeted exercises from class materials.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, a student's working out was often messy or unclear—especially when labeling shapes or setting out steps in algebra—which made it hard to check answers or spot errors (tidying up working out so that silly mistakes aren't made).

During a Year 10 creative writing task, another hesitated to expand on ideas and preferred "telling" over showing, limiting depth in essays.

A senior Chemistry student missed early classes and struggled to keep up with current content; gaps grew because she avoided revisiting foundational material.

Forgotten homework also delayed progress for a Year 9 student in Croydon South.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Croydon South noticed Gabby, a Year 10 student, move from hesitating over factorising quadratics to confidently using the grouping method on her own—something she found confusing just a few weeks ago.

In another session, Sebastian in Year 11, who once struggled to generate ideas for English tasks, was able to brainstorm creative themes independently for his SAC protest piece without prompting and even suggested new vocabulary options independently.

Meanwhile, Ava in Year 4 started double-checking her answers for mistakes rather than rushing through maths problems; she finished her worksheet today with every answer self-checked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Croydon Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tinternvale Primary School.
