The most important thing would be to be able to encourage and motivate the student. The tutor should be able to help the students with any difficulty or problem that they may have. As such, the tutor should also ensure that there is effective commuication between him and his/her student so that the latter can ask any questions without hesitation.…

It is important to be compassionate and build rapport. It is also important to help students visualise problems and identify the student’s learning style so that they are able to present information in a way that has the greatest effect. Definitely patience. I think its easy for people to think tutoring will be a cakewalk, knowing that you’re well versed in a subject. But having the ability to be able to slow down, and take the time that the student needs is very important I would say that I am: Kind Patient Have the ability to make it…

I feel like one of the most common problems I see with fellow University Students is a mental block carried over from their high school days - the preconception that they "simply can't do" particular things or that they're not good enough at a subject to attempt things. As such, I feel like getting rid of these blocks by showing students that even…

A tutor should be able to teach a student how to learn. They shouldn't just coach students on what they are studying but also how they are studying - whether their mode of study is effective and efficient enough. So that in the end, the student is able to tackle any subject or obstacle they run into without a tutor. Being friendly and…

The most important thing is helping the student actually understand the material, not just memorise it. I think it's important to equip a student with the skills to learn and study independently, rather than having them memorise answers to pass a test. I think it's also important to unlock the motivation of the student, why do they want to study this subject? What will passing mean for their future? I strive to be a role model, exemplifying…

Over the course of a tutor's time with a student, the most important skill they can provide is the ability to think both critically and universally, fueled by a hunger for knowledge. Inside DalkeithTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Phoebe worked on mastering organic chemistry concepts like using the periodic table to draw molecules and distinguish between polar and non-polar substances, as well as refining scientific writing skills for her assignment by focusing on terminology, referencing, and grammar.

Another Year 11 student completed revision in biology for an upcoming test and then shifted to practicing vectors, covering vector operations and applications.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student consolidated understanding of linear equations and their graphs using practice questions, also revisiting probability and statistics topics in preparation for assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student working on financial mathematics was encouraged to "try do his own findings on loans," highlighting a need for greater independence in researching and applying concepts beyond guided lessons.

In Year 10, one tutor noted, "he does most of his problem solving mentally," which meant key algebraic steps were left unwritten—making errors harder to spot or correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student still made small calculation mistakes when she didn't line up numbers carefully during addition and subtraction; messy layout slowed her progress and increased confusion during worded problems.

Recent Achievements

One Dalkeith tutoring session saw a high school student, Cooper, move from struggling with interest calculations to confidently working through problems on his own after some targeted practice.

In another case, Phoebe (Year 11 Chemistry) started out unsure where her knowledge gaps were, but she independently identified what needed revisiting and even adopted new study habits like reading aloud—something she hadn't tried before.

Meanwhile, Tilly in Year 4 had been hesitant with times tables, but now answers questions for the 4s and 7s quickly even when asked in random order.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dalkeith Primary School.
