The most important things a tutor can do for a student is continual support and encouragement. When students are faced with difficulties such as hard questions they are unable to tackle, I will provide them with guidance, gradually steering them to the correct answer. To reinforce their understanding, I will also use visualisation and personalised…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build both understanding and confidence. It’s important to help students truly understand the concepts they’re learning, but it’s equally important that they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes while they learn. A good tutor should be able to identify where a student is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show the student that through perseverance they can be good at the subject, and to appreciate the subject's content for what it is. Another important feature is instilling confidence in the student as that is a skill that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. I am currently…

Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. In this case, it is important for the tutor to encourage students and create a supportive learning environment in a way that helps the student see their progress. It is also important for a tutor to guide the student through a question, rather than just…

The most important thing I can do is give the student a sense of worth, confidence and the reassurance of their own abilities. In the future, my student may or may not forget the content but they will certainly remember the study habits and skills in which they approach learning. It is so important to provide not only academic independence but…

Whilst improving their grades is important, the most important thing a tutor can do is help their student find their love for learning, ensuring that they will push themselves to be curious. I can adapt my explanations well, if the way I am explaining something is not working for them I will try again in a different way, sometimes incorporating…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student believe in themselves. When students feel supported and not judged, they are much more willing to ask questions and try again when something feels hard. It is also important to guide them rather than just give answers. A good tutor helps students understand how to think through…

What I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a healthy and suitable learning environment. To help a student walk the right path that he/she desires. A tutor should understand a students passion and dream and help them achieve this dream. As a tutor, I believe it to be of utmost importance that the student does not feel helpless or lost in a certain school subject, as it is our duty to aid them as much as we can. By teaching and explaining ideas to our students with patience, it is with no doubt that our students will be able to grasp and fathom said ideas in no time. Most…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the students…

Inside DarlinghurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Maddison worked on trigonometry, focusing on finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles and solving problems involving elevation, depression, and bearings using diagrams.

For Year 10, revision included bearings and angle of depression before moving into probability concepts—correcting worksheet errors and previewing relative frequency and non-linear relationships.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student prepared for exams by discussing theoretical versus experimental probability with examples on relative frequency, followed by a review of non-linear relationships including parabolas, exponentials, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided asking questions in class when confused, especially during algebra and probability lessons; as one tutor noted, "she needed extra explanation, but didn't seek it out." This meant confusion built up until revisited later.

In Year 10 mathematics, another student struggled with exam preparation because revision focused only on familiar problems—when new question types appeared, confidence dropped sharply.

A senior student's messy working in geometry made errors hard to trace: "Working was so disorganised that small sign errors went unnoticed," a tutor observed. After the test, time was lost hunting for simple mistakes instead of reviewing concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Darlinghurst tutor noticed Maddison, a Year 9 student, now actively asks for help when stuck instead of guessing—something she avoided in earlier sessions.

In Year 11 maths, William took the initiative to list specific assignment areas he wanted to revisit and worked through complex probability questions with less guidance than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently completed 25 multiplication questions in under three minutes—a big jump from her slower attempts last term. Last week's session ended with her finishing all problems independently and double-checking her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Darlinghurst Public School.
