A tutor should be understanding of their students' learning and study patterns and help them in a way that will benefit their students the most. A tutor should personally support and encourage their student to become more confident in themselves and their study areas alongside explaining content. I am able to use a range of different explaining…

And in terms of enjoyment, tutor can try best to make the lesson enjoyable and engaging for the students which can be beneficial for their…

Being patient and guide them through how they should solve their problems instead of forcing only one way to them. Give them examples on how things should be with the aid of diagrams to picture the problem to them and make them think of the solution instead of blindly giving them answers. I am a persevered and patient person. I will be patient and…

Impart knowledge and methods for learning. Aiding them in their learning methods would benefit them more than just imparting knowledge. Helping them improve their learning methods would serve them better in the future. As a current student, I still experience the struggle to learn and internalize the subject material and will be able to empathize…

I like to create a safe space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as I believe it is crucial for effective learning and something that most traditional schools fail to provide. I believe my…

Different methods of teaching should be applied in order to keep the student interested. I am patient, understanding and kind. I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

There are two main things that a tutor should aim to provide for a student: 1. Confidence/Self esteem - Students can't learn if they feel bad about themselves or their ability to learn (learn maths specifically in this case) Any teacher of a student, needs to praise a students effort as being inherently valuable as well as praising any…

It's often frustrating not to understand what is being taught in class and feeling behind. I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. As an older sister (and informal tutor) to a 10-year-old little girl, I've…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improve their confidence and self-esteem. I find with many of my past students, they posses the skills to complete assignments but simply don't believe in themselves. Recieving poor or mediocre grades can crush a students morale leading to a bitterness towards a subect. This tends to be a…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

Inside DeepdeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Bob worked through a summary of key Year 7 Maths concepts to identify strengths and areas needing support, including integers and angles from the start of the Year 8 syllabus.

For a Year 10 student, recent lessons focused on quadratic equations—specifically factorising using grouping methods and the null factor law—and also included expanding expressions and solving equations.

Another high schooler tackled statistics by reviewing standard deviation calculations and working through their school's statistics worksheet for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, a student was observed struggling to apply prime factorisation in square root problems during a practice test; skipping written steps made errors harder to catch.

In VCE Maths Methods, another arrived without their CAS calculator or workbook, which slowed progress on calculus tasks and left them less able to ask targeted questions.

For a Year 10 algebra lesson, messy working and missing units led to incorrect answers that were difficult to trace—one tutor noted, "they didn't label their answers or show clear reasoning." These habits caused confusion and wasted time revisiting old ground instead of building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Deepdene tutor noticed a big change in a Year 11 student who used to skip over tricky problems, but now shows their working step-by-step and checks each answer for accuracy.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them actively ask questions instead of staying silent when confused—something they'd avoided before—and even correct their own mistakes without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised their tutor by solving money word problems independently after struggling with basic addition just weeks earlier.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of Good Counsel School.
