The best thing I believe is to help student realize their ability in learning mathematics. I consider the shift from teacher-centered teaching to learner-centered learning is essential. I will try to help my students solve the problem by themselves by giving hints rather than straight up giving them the answer. As student gains success in solving…

Mostly is the responsibility and the enthusiasm. As a tutor, they must do their responsibility to let students not only know the syllabus, but also have their critical and extend thinking about further questions. Tutors should prepare any references and the plans before the lesson, and be patient and polite to any students during the class. Give…

I use different methods of communication and practice questions to ensure the student understands the topic. In some cases, i developed worksheets and mock exams to help…

The most important thing is to make sure no one is left behind. For example if I just taught quadratic equations to a year 10 student and then move on to logarithms before they grasp the topic of quadratics, their knowledge in quadratics may be lost if not practiced regularly and they may not have fully understood the importance or purpose of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to become independent. I would say that tutoring is only a temporary solution to their academic problems. If they are going to enter a university, get a real job or did not have enough money to pay for tutoring services, I would want them to learn on their own. A time would…

A tutor must adapt to the strengths of a student. Different students have different ways of understanding concepts. For example, some need written explanations and some are comfortable with verbal explanations. Keeping this is mind is key to helping a student. Also, it is very important for a tutor to make a student comfortable enough for…

Tutors need to understand the question asked by students before they teach the solution to students. After solving the problems, it is important to analyse the problems that students have. Students might be unclear about one basic theory, resulting in the incapability of solving extended questions. Therefore, tutors should be able to point out the…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in their own ability to learn. While improving grades is important, a good tutor should also encourage students to think independently, ask questions, and develop problem solving skills that will help them beyond the classroom. A tutor should also be patient,…

I think most importantly a tutor should be able to engage students more in learning through group/individual activities to keep them going and learning with the entire class. I believe the most important things that a tutor can do for a student mainly relies on what the end goal of the student is. If it is just to get the homework done, it will get done. But, for me as a tutor, I would personally make sure that every student understands the concept from the beginning rather than providing a general overview. I believe…

Skye, Denistone

Inside Denistone EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mada worked on understanding positive and negative integers before focusing on rates and ratios as covered in class.

In Year 8, Amelia spent time revising algebra skills and then practiced solving problems involving rates and ratios for her upcoming assessment.

For Year 11, Mey tackled exponential and logarithmic equations as well as integration techniques to prepare for an assessment task.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete her homework for two consecutive weeks, which meant lesson time was spent catching up instead of learning new concepts.

In Year 11, a student described struggling with test timing; as one tutor noted, "she needs to practice under timed conditions" to avoid unfinished exam sections.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner often skipped writing out working in algebra questions—leading to repeated sign errors that slowed progress.

A Year 10 student showed low confidence when facing multi-step word problems and hesitated to attempt unfamiliar formats, especially during area and perimeter tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Denistone East noticed that one Year 11 student, who previously hesitated with trigonometric proofs, was able to independently prove identities by the end of the lesson—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance before.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student started attempting harder algebra word problems on his own after usually sticking only to basics; he even asked for clarification when stuck instead of giving up.

In primary sessions, Alexis (Year 4) managed all her area and volume questions without mistakes and remembered her times tables clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Denistone East Public School.
