I think the two most important things are making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, and actually understanding where they're stuck rather than just re-explaining the same thing louder. A lot of students stay quiet because they're embarrassed to admit they don't get something, so creating a judgment-free environment matters a…

Not only to foster understanding, but building confidence is essential. This involves fluency of course, but also being confident in trying many methods even if it gets tedious after the first few attempts, while being able to seek help no matter the triviality. I'm patient with all learning paces, and enthusiastic to learn about any student's way…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, adapt to their individual learning style, and create a consistent and supportive learning experience. A good tutor should not only help improve grades, but also help the student become more independent in their learning. This includes encouraging…

Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. Wether that be to a different learning style or struggle and through tutoring be able to help them to understand how to study and progress in their…

My guiding principle as a tutor is to lead students towards the most effective learning paths to achieve their goals. I recognize the importance of steering them away from the pitfalls I encountered in my own experiences, ensuring they avoid repeating the same mistakes on their educational journey. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is allow them to learn. I have seen cases where tutors sit there and answer the student once they get stuck, which I consider detrimental to the child's learning. I recognize the importance of facilitating learning by guiding students rather than just answering their work for them. When I was…

Change in accordance to what a student expresses. No one likes to be feel or be stated as dumb, a tutor should be a guide more than an instructor. He/ she should be a friend who shares their knowledge while solving problems together rather than being a standard commercial teacher. Personalization, Adaptation, Patience, Practical…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

I believe the most vital thing a tutor can do for a student is to give an explanation. We tutors exist to answer and explain questions that a lesson can't provide. Generally, it is best that a student is comfortable asking questions without being judged by classmates and that is the foundation of learning. Not to mention, each tutor might have a…

Again, it is understanding and comprehending. Memorising is the second. I am bachelor of clinical science student and I have so much to memorise in anatomy. But even in anatomy, understanding is the first step. I think every thing has a whey they are. I think I need to teach them why they are learning. I focus on one thing "comprehension" I think…

A tutor must be aware of the needs of a student. They must understand what the student already knows, and how they best learn, and a good tutor can adapt to different student needs. A good tutor also needs to inject confidence into a student. Teaching is one thing, but showing a student that they can succeed is what makes a difference. I am a…

I think a tutor's primary role is to simplify complex concepts, adapt to individual needs, and foster confidence. Ease their anxiety. Time spent on understanding. (Process is more important than the result) Giving them the tools to fish than rather the fish itself. Showing them stress doesn’t solve problems, making an effort does. There is nothing you can’t do. One day these things will help you. Make them realise their potential. Patience…

One of the important things a math tutor can do for students is constantly testing them with the knowledge they have already absorbed in the past. Questions need to be changed, but concepts need to be practiced repetitively. The other important thing tutor can do to help students is organizing notes. Math contains a sphere of knowledge (formula/…

A tutor is more than a teacher. A teachers job is to give a student a base level of understanding whereas a tutor can build on that and go further. This allows students to revisit sections that the teacher brushed over or to build on sections they seemingly understand to ensure they can answer a greater range of question types. Along with the…

A tutor can guide a student to succeed. Not only in studies, but life in general. Mostly is the responsibility and the enthusiasm. As a tutor, they must do their responsibility to let students not only know the syllabus, but also have their critical and extend thinking about further questions. Tutors should prepare any references and the plans before the lesson, and be patient and polite to any students during the class. Give…

Inside Denistone EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Mada worked on understanding positive and negative integers before focusing on rates and ratios as covered in class.

In Year 8, Amelia spent time revising algebra skills and then practiced solving problems involving rates and ratios for her upcoming assessment.

For Year 11, Mey tackled exponential and logarithmic equations as well as integration techniques to prepare for an assessment task.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete her homework for two consecutive weeks, which meant lesson time was spent catching up instead of learning new concepts.

In Year 11, a student described struggling with test timing; as one tutor noted, "she needs to practice under timed conditions" to avoid unfinished exam sections.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner often skipped writing out working in algebra questions—leading to repeated sign errors that slowed progress.

A Year 10 student showed low confidence when facing multi-step word problems and hesitated to attempt unfamiliar formats, especially during area and perimeter tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Denistone East noticed that one Year 11 student, who previously hesitated with trigonometric proofs, was able to independently prove identities by the end of the lesson—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance before.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student started attempting harder algebra word problems on his own after usually sticking only to basics; he even asked for clarification when stuck instead of giving up.

In primary sessions, Alexis (Year 4) managed all her area and volume questions without mistakes and remembered her times tables clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West Ryde Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Denistone East Public School.
