It is key to achieving results that you build a strong rapport with your student. If they feel judged by you and thus do not ask the questions they need to ask, it can stagnate their progress and damage their…

The tutor must be able to eliminate every question or doubt a student has on a subject or concept and enable the student to comprehend the information not just for scoring grades, but, for understanding and using the information in any scenario which requires it. Hence, the tutor must be able to inculcate this idea in the student and facilitate…

I feel that a tutor can basically change a student's perception to a particular subject. A tutor has the power to build the foundations of a subject in a simplified and innovative way such that it is comprehended easily by the students. When it comes to teaching new concepts, I seldom go by the book. I think it is more important to give a…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand their student. All students have different strengths and weaknesses, and it is the responsibility of the tutor to understand their student as an individual in order to tutor in a way that is the most effective for a student to improve. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not only boost their confidence in a subject, but also their enthusiasm for the subject. Giving students who are bored with the content as they find it too easy more difficult problems peaks their interest, as I have seen in the past. Students who are struggling and as a result lose interest…

Inside Denman ProspectTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Andrew focused on mastering differentiation using chain, product, and quotient rules, and applied these to identify stationary points in calculus problems.

In Year 12, Lily worked through probability topics including sample space, conditional probability, and the Binomial Distribution—tackling both theory and exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam reviewed laws of indices and practiced solving exponential equations, reinforcing key algebraic skills for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student in calculus was seen to panic when faced with multiple formulas, sometimes skipping key steps—one tutor noted, "he jumped ahead in long questions and missed crucial symbols."

In a recent Year 12 exam, another student lost marks by failing to read the full question and leaving some parts unanswered, showing signs of poor time management under pressure.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 learner relied heavily on a calculator for basic multiplications and squares; this slowed down progress during timed assessments. In these moments, confusion or hesitation replaced confidence and momentum.

Recent Achievements

One Denman Prospect tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to skip tricky calculus questions now methodically work through each step, leading to fewer mistakes on practice exams.

In Year 10, Sami—who previously hesitated to try extra problems—has begun creating his own maths questions by modifying class examples, which helped him better understand parabolas and stick with tough tasks until he solved at least one of each type.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student recently started spotting her own errors during revision instead of waiting for hints, finishing her last worksheet without any reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Evelyn Scott School.
