It's essential to be understanding and listen to students as not all the students are the same or behave the same in a class. Therefore, a tutor must understand the extraordinary things about each student and act in a way so every student would be interested in engaging with the class. I believe understanding this point can help every child to…

I think that a good tutor should be able to inspire and motivate their student to do well. They should also be able to relate with the student and understand how they learn best so that they can teach them well. They must also have the skill set and knowledge to explain difficult concepts. I think that I'd be really committed as a tutor and make a…

The most important thing for me as a tutor is helping them understand the problem instead of just knowing how to solve the problem, since if they can only solve the question, if a question outside of the curriculum came out then they would not understand how to solve it I like to show real-world applications of a problem, which I think is my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and encouraging of the abilities they already have, while pushing them to learn and achieve as much as they can. I believe my biggest strengths to be my patience as a teacher, and my ability to tackle different problems from various angles. I find it better to spend time…

Many tutors can simply explain content and answer questions, but I believe a great tutor inspires a passion for the field of study in the student. While supporting students to achieve their best grades is important to me, the best feeling as a tutor is seeing students who previously struggled and didn't enjoy a subject find things about it that…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

The first step is to listen to the problem of the student. Identify the best way to teach the student. Then slowly improve the confidence in the student to master the subject. My strengths as a tutor are clear communication, patience, and the ability to adapt explanations to different learning styles while building students’ confidence and…

I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. I believe this is the difference between being a tutor to becoming a mentor as well which will elevate the students' skills in many ways not only in…

Teach them beyond the questions and exams. A tutor should be a role model for the student as they themselves often inspire their students. I am a dedicated person with attentions to details. I have great patience when teaching my student problems, always encouraging them to try their best and give them compliments when they succeed in their…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is believe in each student, and provide a constant support and show up each week. All these add in maintaining a healthy relationship and connection with the student. I believe providing a comfortable place for the student greatly increases the actual learning that is able to take place. It…

Instill a passion to learn the subject the tutor is helping out with and just generally help make the student feel competent when dealing with the subject. Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

I think the most important is to keep a check whether the student is understanding then and there and not relying on some youtube video they might watch later. Another thing which I felt personally was that making sure there is a perfect link between lectures and a adequate amount of practice during learning. The way I can explain through…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guide them towards the answer, in a way that allows the student to fully understand a concept rather than just solve a specific question. Inside DocklandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Hamish focused on place value and identifying prime numbers, using practice exam questions for consolidation.

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving systems of linear equations by elimination and explored the distance formula between two points with visual explanations.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled function modelling with real-world examples (such as insect population growth) and analysed rectangular hyperbolas, including their transformations and asymptotes.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student's algebra work showed gaps due to incomplete homework and minimal revision of textbook questions—"she tended to skip the assigned practice," a tutor noted, which left some equation-solving steps unpracticed.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student felt overwhelmed by dense chemistry chapters and sometimes postponed review tasks; this led to confusion during multi-step equilibrium problems, especially when tired after tests.

In Year 4 maths, inconsistent working in times tables caused errors like "3 x 4 = 11."

A Year 12 student avoided asking for feedback on graphing questions, so misconceptions lingered into the next session.

Recent Achievements

One Docklands tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Maya, started their sessions feeling nervous about upcoming biology tests but now prompts herself to review marked work and pushes through practice questions independently—something she used to avoid.

In Year 10 maths, Hamish recently stopped skipping key steps when solving linear equations and inequalities; he now writes out double negatives rather than rushing, which helps him catch mistakes that previously cost marks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Lola has become noticeably quicker at linking old and new maths topics on her own and has started presenting her solutions with clarity during lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Library at the Dock—or at your child's school (with permission), like Haileybury College - City Boys.
