As a one-on-one teaching assistant with more than one year of experience, providing some notes and problem-solving skills to students, and the notes would not be covered by their school. Furthermore, the tutoring note would be based on the studying situation of different students, so the teaching notes would have strong pertinence and thus help…

A tutor must have a knack to be in the students shoes and understand his understanding of things so as we could provide them the right way of thinking. My ability to correlate theoretical concepts with physical examples for better understanding of students. Also I too have great organisational skills…

1. Make sure they have the encouragement they need. 2. The most important thing is to explain to them why they should take these studies and how it will help them in their future endeavors. 3. Treat students with respect and teach them how to treat others with respect. During my years as a student, I found it difficult to learn stuff very…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and create a supportive learning environment where questions and mistakes are welcomed. A tutor should personalise their approach to match the student’s individual learning style, clarify difficult concepts in simple terms, and encourage curiosity and…

I believe an essential aspect to include in tutoring is helping students to develop metacognitive and study skills. In mainstream education, the uniqueness of student learning processes is often neglected. When I tutor students, I highly value teaching the specific study skills that will be most effective for them, imparting not merely content…

Help them actually understand the material, not just get the right answer that one time. Keep their confidence up so they don't start believing they're just bad at the subject. And honestly, work myself out of a job a little, teach them habits they can use on their own instead of making them rely on you. I'm patient, I'll explain something three…

teach understanding of a topic rather than how to do a problem so the student can tackle more difficult problems on there own without help. With understanding you can answer any question. I believe one of the most vital things that tutors can do is alter their teaching type based on different students' abilities and progression over time. I think this helps differentiate tutoring from normal schooling as normal schooling is generalised for all students and doesn't cater for individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I believe…

A good tutor must be able to understand the needs of the student. Every students has his/her own level and it is very important for a good tutor to recognise that level. Once I recognise that level, I start with that level and along with teaching and explaining I always try to involve the students as much as possible in learning through various…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them see past exams and assessments and really understand what the concepts are and why they are studying them in the first place. I always to go through the theory really well first and subsequently tackle challenging problems and show how to break them into bite-sized pieces. Then…

Build real understanding rather than memorisation, and build the student's confidence alongside it. My personal measure of whether a student has actually learned something is whether they could turn around and explain it to someone else. I think a good tutor also needs to be patient and encouraging, especially when a student is struggling, because…

Beyond grades, I consider a real tutoring success to be one that positively impacts a students’ relationship with studying overall. The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

Khalida, Doncaster East

Inside Doncaster EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised long division with remainders and explored onomatopoeias to strengthen both numeracy and creative language skills.

For Year 8, Lily worked through textbook review questions in measurement, focusing on applying Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths in right-angled triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel concentrated on trigonometry by identifying which trigonometric ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to use when solving for unknown angles or sides in various problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided making her own notes on cellular respiration, which meant key details (like inputs/outputs) were not fully memorised; as one tutor noted, "she needs to create her own notes to help with memorisation."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 Maths, another student relied heavily on mental calculations for algebra and skipped writing out steps—when mistakes happened, it became difficult to spot where things went wrong.

A Year 7 student sometimes struggled to identify what the question was asking in worded problems and spent extra time working backwards rather than building a clear process first.

Recent Achievements

One Doncaster East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions now works through complex inequalities independently, giving every question a try and getting them right.

In VCE Biology, another high school student who used to rely heavily on hints now confidently explains each stage of photosynthesis without prompting and answers new cellular respiration questions accurately.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a younger learner who once mixed up coin values can now count $5 and $10 notes correctly while adding up change, finishing her money exercises with no help needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Donburn Primary School.
