I think for a tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to keep…

I think that these 3 things are a must : Work on Student’s strengths. Look for students interests , so we can connect them to the contents being thought. Constant feedback I have good rapport with students , and I firmly believe that all starts with connection, so students can feel at ease. Adaptability is key because with individual…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect with a…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to organise the lesson in such a way which is in line to the the learning style of the student and ensures that the student improves on regular basis. The experience of tutoring has made me realise that patience is the key to become a successful tutor. Along with that comes the…

Help them understand their school work and help them enjoy. To take away that fear of being left behind or that doubt in themselves. For them to know that by hard work they can improve. I am very patient with kids because I know how difficult Math can be. I try my best to think of ways to explain Math concepts simpler for them. Seeing them doing…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them to understand concepts instead of giving them formulae to memorize or solutions to copy. By helping a student realize their own potential to solve problems by honing their strengths and finding methods that work for them, it gives a student confidence in their…

I think the most important thing as a tutor you need to be honest, be flexible, be patient, be a good listener, teach the student how to learn. I believe tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make sure…

Even if a student does not have an expert level of understanding or skill, confidence can really elevate performance in exam conditions and situations where it matters. Additionally, passion to learn is instrumental in mastering a subject, and I believe if…

A tutor is responsible for providing guidance, by leading the way and showing the students that learning does not have to be intimidating and daunting, through their own experience. Moreover, a tutor has to be a motivator, one who serves as a role model and inspires curiosity, so the student can reach their full potential. i’m motivated to teach…

Also since students are more likely to do better when they feel encouraged and…

A tutor should help students develop both understanding and confidence. This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

In general, I aim to build confidence and self-belief in a student in order to be independently successful. Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
