In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. Make the student feel the subject is not difficult by explaining concepts step wise. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

I believe there are several things a tutor can deliver to her students, the primary of which is to instill a sense of confidence and can-do attitude among them. This means my role will not only limit to a tutor but also a mentor, guiding my students on multiple aspects of their academic path. As a seasoned tutor and teacher of English, I'd say my…

I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. If something doesn't click the first time, I'm happy to explain it again in a different way.…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. To reassure them that having a tutor and needing a bit of extra help is nothing to be ashamed of. Moreover than learning the tasks, helping them feel they're capable of more than they think they are. The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Try to make them feel confident in themselves and build intuition. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

Clare

Inside Dudley ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lily focused on solving algebraic equations and revising fraction rules, including converting fractions into decimals using long division.

In Year 9, Jacob practised expanding brackets and worked through difference of two squares problems with step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sienna tackled factorisation and quadratic trinomials, applying these skills to financial problem scenarios to build confidence ahead of her assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, a student often relied on her notes during exercises but didn't revisit them later, which meant she kept making the same sign mistakes in algebra despite reminders—she made the same mistake regarding 'sign changing' very often even with notes available.

For a Year 10 test, another student didn't let the tutor know ahead of time, missing out on tailored preparation and feeling less confident in worded problems.

In primary years, one student forgot to do her homework entirely for a shapes task, leading to confusion when new formulas appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Dudley Park tutor recently noticed a big shift in Athena, a high school student who used to need reminders but now actively takes notes and solves algebraic problems on her own—she even scored 87% on her latest test.

Another high schooler, Constanza, previously hesitated to ask questions but has started posting thoughtful queries during sessions and now finishes homework independently by applying strategies from previous lessons.

In Year 4, Alyse was initially unsure with new maths topics, but after just one session she applied the taught formula correctly and solved all the given worded problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prospect Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosary School.
