A tutor should strive in revelaling different perspectives in a world they can intuitively grasp. This engages the student in learning and fuels their passion in learning and adaptation in cascading for the next level. With a year teaching programming I excel in deconstructing a concept into a more tangible world. Ranging from live demonstrations…

Some of the most important things, I believe, a tutor can do for a student are provide the student with the comfort that it is alright to make mistakes and it is the learning from them is what is important. Every student is different and it is the responsibility of the tutor to convey themselves in a way which caters to their understanding. It is…

I think the most important thing is not only being decent at explaining and individually creating a good tutoring plan for the student but also to be empathetic. Without empathy, the student will not feel like the tutor understands their struggles and is truly trying to help them. Apart from showing them that understanding and kindly communicating…

The tutor can change the life of a student. A tutor is like a mentor for any student. Teacher teach concepts but the tutor makes sure that the student understands how to apply that concept. I had a great tutor during my primary school who helped me to understand what is the purpose of my life and what is the goal of my life. I want to set a great…

A tutor , according to me should be available to the student at all times. They have to respond to the student's enquiries without much lag. Additionally, teachers have to be truly dedicated especially in terms of correction of homework and assignments. I have had students giving me feedback like I am really patient in clarifying the concepts.…

Listening to their needs and their struggles is vital to finding a way for them to enjoy school and the subject. You need to be able to push the student but in a way that helps them to achieve something they're proud of. Pushing them for results is usually only going to increase their frustration and dislike for school/learning. Tutors are in a…

A tutor, first and foremost, must ensure that a student is improving their grades, that is why people look for tutors in the first place. However, as well as this, a really good tutor can instil a genuine love of a given subject. This will also greatly assist in improving the student's performance. Thus the most important thing a tutor can do is…

Tutors are useful in the way that if a student didn’t understand how something was explained in class, we can offer different and more in depth explanations to help them achieve this understanding. Ensuring a student feels comfortable enough to ask questions is the most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion. That I am supportive, positive…

Provide a stable and consistent source of support in their education, while simultaneously being a person they are under no pressure to impress. Since tutors have no influence over their lives outside of tutoring, students often feel comfortable asking us questions they would feel embarrassed or "dumb" for asking a parent or teacher. Tutors…

It’s also essential to build their confidence by helping them understand their strengths and develop the skills they need to succeed.…

I see no student a failure, and I will take their failure as my own. The most quintessential thing any tutor can do is adapt to the student's way of thinking and guide them to success. When you help others, you grow in the process. There is no important thing a tutor can do for a student apart from working on themselves to aid the student better…

I think the fundamental aspect of tutoring is the dedication of time to the student and their understanding. Ensuring that they are comfortable and confident with their learning and being a guide along the way is at the heart of being a good tutor. For me, tutoring is about finding the keys to a few important concepts - about finding how they…

Inside DuffyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lily focused on proofs of congruent and similar triangles using SSS and RHS tests, and practiced calculating scaling factors for similar triangles.

In Year 10, James worked on balancing chemical equations, including writing net-ionic forms and naming polyatomic ions, as well as making experimental observations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah reviewed binomial distributions by calculating expected value and variance from exercises and explored Bernoulli distributions in preparation for assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a pattern emerged: "Careless mistakes in complex math," such as missing terms and incomplete exam responses, were often linked to time management struggles.

One session noted blank answers on the test—he ran out of time before attempting all questions.

In Year 8 algebra, skipping steps in multi-part problems led to confusion about what each symbol represented; as one tutor observed, "He tended to jump ahead or skip basic steps."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student repeatedly forgot to bring required materials for long division practice, which slowed progress week-to-week and left homework incomplete.

Recent Achievements

One Duffy tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask for help, now openly asks clarifying questions mid-lesson and tackles practice problems much more independently.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to make repeated errors in balancing chemical equations not only recognised all polyatomic ions correctly but completed equation-balancing tasks far faster than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student—who had struggled with area and perimeter concepts—solved several worded problems without prompting and explained each step out loud as he worked through them.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Duffy Primary School.
