A tutor is there both to teach content and to improve a student's study habits. Seeking advice from teachers, peers, and my past tutor, I have developed helpful study skills and I recognise inefficient habits. I have gained an appreciation for tuning study practices to the individual for optimal results. Learning to work with my ADHD has…

The most important thing to do as a biology tutor for the student is provide an encouraging environment with the right tools to enable the student to progress in the subject. It is important to build a trusting relationship with the student by being reliable, kind, and positive. My strengths as a tutor are my determination, my flexibility, and my…

I think a biology tutor needs the ability to see things from another person's perspective as many tend to forget that the student may not have all the background knowledge that may seem like common sense to most, leading to a lot of confusion and frustration on both ends. I think a tutor also needs to be ready to get creative as students,…

Helping them to develop their own learning style, or styles, to perform in a variety of circumstances is one of the most critical things a biology tutor can impart on a student. Examinations and content will never be delivered in the exact same way, so providing students with the means to navigate the ambiguities of examination and focus purely on…

A tutor should provide a student a "light-bulb" moment, where they suddenly understand a concept, gain an idea or know how to answer a question. Light-bulb moments allow students to gain confidence in the subject, and thus achieve the goal of a higher mark. I believe it is also important for tutors to provide tips for dealing with stress,…

I'd say the most important thing is to teach the student. It's also important to motivate the student into having a great work ethic so they continue to learn outside designated class time. I am very friendly and approachable, I like to make students feel like they can ask me any questions they want. I'm also quite flexible and am willing to bend…

Tutors should be willing to listen and work well with students to achieve their personal goals. Tutors must foster or inspire a strong work ethic within students, motivating them to strive to reach their personal best. Aside from increasing a student's comprehension of particular subjects, tutors should highlight the importance of speaking up and…

a biology tutor must strive to find what a student lack and try to complement it. For example , a slacking student , in most cases, might be just lacking vision for his future. A tutor must guide him towards setting targets for himself. I am able to identify learning styles of…

A step by step technique. It is important that the student is shown the correct way to solve a problem as the student might not have understood the basics of the lesson. When teaching the student, it is important to go through the lesson and make sure the student understands the lesson before commencing with the assignment. It is out job to…

I am approachable and non-judgemental so students can ask me for help on school topics that they may not want to ask their teachers or parents due to anxiety. One of the most important things is to care. A tutor should genuinely care about the student's development and do their very best to help the student in every possible way. It is also important for the tutor to teach their students to be independent. I can approach shy students and not be an intimidating figure. I am also patient and do not rush…

The most important things a biology tutor can do for a student is to establish their confidence, give them the attention, teach the most efficient strategies to succeed in the exam with the least lessons. Students can't succeed in their exam is because there are so-called 'good students' in their class, for multiple reasons, their teachers don't…

It's important for a biology tutor to help a student get the correct answer, but more importantly it is critical that the student understands the concept behind which the answer was based. Inside Duffys ForestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Viktoria worked on simplifying fractions, including both proper and improper types, as well as geometry skills with perimeter and area using shared whiteboard activities.

Year 9 Lachlan revised factorising quadratic equations and grouped like terms while also using Desmos to visualise algebraic graphs for better understanding.

For Year 11, Brandon practiced combinatorics and permutations in probability, followed by a review of recent test questions to clarify misunderstandings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 calculus, messy homework setting out and not looking back at notes led to repeated confusion with chain and product rules. "He needs to look back at his notes when doing homework," a tutor observed—time was lost searching for methods rather than practicing application.

In Year 10 probability, unclear working made it difficult to spot where conditional reasoning went astray.

For a Year 5 student tackling perimeter and fractions, skipping steps or relying on copying formats resulted in missed details; rushed columns meant simple errors crept into otherwise solid logic. Confidence dropped after setbacks, slowing progress even more.

Recent Achievements

One Duffys Forest tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with fractions now accurately solved them in test questions—an area that had been a stumbling block before.

In a recent high school session, Brandon challenged himself by tackling advanced GCSE-level surds problems without hesitation and began using a highlighter independently to break down worded maths questions, something he hadn't tried until recently.

Meanwhile, Viktoria in primary school has started finishing her daily multiplication sheets much faster than before and now consistently attempts every question herself before seeking help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Terrey Hills Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Japanese International School.
