I believe a tutor’s most important role is to be patient and truly understand how each student learns. By breaking down concepts clearly, sharing practical strategies, and creating a supportive and encouraging environment, a tutor can help students gain confidence, retain knowledge, and genuinely enjoy the process of learning. One of my biggest…

First thing is trust, the tutor should be responsible, good listener, and patient; as a result, the student will trust on him and feel more comfortable to learn. Second, the tutor should understand and analyze the student difficulties to create an individual approach for his learning. Therefore, teaching will be an easy way for the tutor and the…

The single most important aspect for a tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off. I believe…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is share his knowledge and experience that will not only help him academically but also in his everyday life; maturing him in an effective and contributing member of the society. I feel my strengths as a tutor/mentor would be my approach in order to help the student. The method I…

Build up confidence to believe that the respective student can succeed. Confidence is the most important thing that a student should have. Without having confidence student will not commit to do studies. I think i can understand students very well. Whether they understand or not can be observed by their actions. I think the most important things a tutor can do are make learning feel less stressful, build a student’s confidence, and adapt to their needs. It’s not just about explaining concepts, it’s about creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions without fear of judgment. Everyone learns differently, so I try to adjust my…

Provide academic guidance, human connection, and consistency, and the combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to find ways on how to deliver the material in a method that the student understands, which mainly depends on the level of knowledge of that individual student. So the tutor should find ways to convey this knowledge, which should be catered to each student and their performance. My biggest…

A tutor needs to be able to inspire a student to strive and succeed in their chosen field, while still maintaining a personal, friendly relationship with them. A tutor must help the student to understand the coursework, but more than that must teach the student how to think (not just what to think) and how to apply that knowledge in many…

Inside East GeelongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Eliz revised subtraction and decimals, practised arithmetic problems, and was introduced to Roman numerals using practical examples.

For Year 8, Ava tackled Pythagoras' Theorem with visual aids and worked on unit conversions relevant to geometry topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam focused on calculus skills—differentiating functions using the chain rule and quotient rule—and applied these techniques to exam-style tangent questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was repeatedly forgetting to bring her books and calculator home, making it difficult to review progress or check homework completion. As a tutor noted, "she tends to forget to bring her school books but always has an alternative task prepared," which disrupted the session's flow and limited targeted support.

In a senior Maths lesson, another student relied too heavily on mental calculations during Pythagoras' Theorem practice; missing calculator use led to avoidable errors.

For one Year 12 learner, skipping double-checks in exam questions resulted in minor mistakes going unnoticed—extra time was then spent searching for what went wrong instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Geelong recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with tough maths problems; she now jumps into challenging questions and usually completes them with hardly any guidance.

Another high school student was excited to tell her tutor about scoring well on her Pythagoras test after working through tricky algebra together—she needed very little help this time, which was a first.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often waited for prompts has started describing pictures in English lessons without being asked, showing real independence by choosing her own words each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcomb Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's School.
