I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make learning approachable, and tailor explanations to their unique needs. A good tutor doesn’t just teach the material—they create a supportive environment where the student feels encouraged to ask questions and grow. My strengths as a tutor are…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

Think to pass the belief that the student can achieve the goal. It is just the matter of working hard and maybe trying different approach. And also not comparing yourself to other students, because everyone is unique. I, myself, was in a situation where I had very low marks in Math and Science subjects, but I worked hard and I saw my brain change…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make him confident in the subject he is struggling with. To understand and sympathize with his problem, and to effectively guide him to success, is one of the most valuable roles of a tutor. A teacher’s role is not solely to raise a student’s grades, but rather to help the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is ensuring that the students feel comfortable in their presence, this ensures that they feel comfortable asking questions which prevents doubts or confusion that can be major setbacks in learning, so removing the fear of asking questions is extremely important. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to become an understanding tutor. There is no point of forcing a student to learn something that they have no interest at. As a tutor, we should understand our students and help them to enjoy the subject they first do not like. Additionally, we should be able to figure out something that…

I believe that it's a tutor's purpose is to push the student at a pace that they're capable of achieving regardless of what that level is. A student can only work to the best of their capacity and achieving this efficiency is the advantaged of personalised education. Listen and teach for the student. If you can't teach in a new way for that student, and you can't recognise that you might not be teaching them in the best way for them, you will most likely fail as a tutor I listen and learn and teach specific to the student. I believe following up with students is the best way to create accountability and instil a routine in them. Also, tutors who put in effort after hours, such as staying back to help or creating personalised tasks to target their weak areas, are critical for students to excel in their studies. Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
