My strength is that I love academics and am a student myself, hence I can understand the difficulty in some topics and help in overcoming any misconceptions that one may…

This means explaining concepts clearly, adapting to their learning style, and creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. The most important thing a tutor can do is be patient and cheer on their student, allowing the student to maintain their self esteem even when they are having trouble. My strengths are my patience, dedication, and being able to reframe how I teach something. For example, I may use the student's personal interests to explain a concept and make it…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in their learning. Many students already have the ability to succeed but just need someone to guide them and explain things in a way that makes sense. A good tutor should be supportive, patient, and willing to adapt to the student’s learning style. It’s also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. When a student can see that someone truly believes in them, they can start to believe in themselves too. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I am always willing to listen. Teaching a student is not lecturing them and assuming that they are a sponge and can absorb everything you say. I believe that to teach a student well, you must be willing to listen to them, and understand how they learn so that you can provide the best learning experience as possible. I want to be a tutor so that I…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. A tutor should first of all help the student to build his self-confidence and self-esteem. Appreciating small efforts and hard work of the student will allow him to be more confident and continue working in that direction. This will help him not only academically but also in later stages of life where he will learn the importance of perseverance…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
