I think being a good communicator is the most important thing a tutor can be for a student. It is their job to help students understand and learn and seamless communication is key to this I think i am kind, friendly and approachable. I am nurturing and patient and believe I can create a fun and reassuring learning…

Personally, I think the most important things a tutor can do are to help a student identify any weak points and build their confidence in a topic, with plenty of guided past-paper questions to keep engagement high. It is also important to explain a topic with the goal of understanding rather than memorization, and to explain the reasoning behind…

Inspiring excitement and curiosity; because active learning that is fuelled by the personal interests of an individual is not only the most efficient way of learning but also the most enjoyable. I am great at seeing connections between concepts and therefore good at relating new topics with prior knowledge. This makes me good at explaining things…

It's often frustrating not to understand what is being taught in class and feeling behind. In addition to teaching and explaining the academic material, I believe a good tutor also provides encouragement to the students and potentially even evoke inspiration and genuine curiosity in that field. My strengths as a tutor lie in the ability of…

Help students understand difficult concepts by breaking them down into simpler parts and explaining them in a way that makes sense. It also provides your child with ideas for solving problems, so that he or she will have a method for solving problems of his or her own when faced with challenging problems in the future. Encourage and support…

Instil in a student a love of learning; teach them how to learn and how to manage their own education. It is relatively easy to study enough to get good marks in an exam, but having a positive attitude and active approach towards learning leads to much better information retention and better outcomes in the future, when the student is on their…

First and foremost, a tutor must have faith in his/her student. Having faith means having the trust that her students have the capability to excel not just academically but, in character development as well. As a tutor, I am not only an assistant in my student’s academic work. I am also a role model whom my student will look up to. Therefore, I…

As a tutor, the most important things I can do for a student are to motivate and inspire them to reach their full potential. By fostering a positive and supportive learning environment, I can encourage their growth and instill a sense of confidence in their abilities. Additionally, establishing a friendly and trusted relationship allows me to…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to use personalised strategies that suit the student's learning style so that they can benefit from their one-on-one lessons in a way that they don't have the opportunity to in the classroom. I also believe it is important for a tutor to understand both the strengths and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and to give them time to grasp a concept. Different methods of teaching should be applied in order to keep the student interested. I am patient, understanding and kind. I will not a rush a student and will take however long they need to understand a concept. I can…

I think tutors have to have the appropriate amount of empathy to understand, not only the way they learn, but also their reason for learning. Best thing tutor can do is align his values with his student's. I think this is a way to frustrate and alienate him. I can approach a problem the way student does. This gives me an insight into where they…

I believe that it's crucial for a tutor to create an open and supportive relationship with their student. A student needs to feel comfortable to ask questions and communicate what they need, and it's the tutor's responsibility to create a space where that is possible. As an older sister (and informal tutor) to a 10-year-old little girl, I've…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment. I like to create a safe space where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as I believe it is crucial for effective learning and something that most traditional schools fail to provide. I believe my…

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
