The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to listen as well as make sure they are able to understand the concepts that they need to understand in order to succeed. My strengths as a tutor are that I have experience in Maths, English, Biology and Science and they challenges they can present. I also listen to students and am able to…

Make them realise that they have the ability to acheive, and helping them unlock that in themselves. My strengths would be in relating to the students, as I am recently out of high school, and understanding how the new SACE system works. My weakness would possibly be with younger children, as it has been a while since I was in the younger years,…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to ultimately inspire them in a love of learning and hopefully pass onto them capsules of knowledge which are priceless. My strengths as a tutor are to challenge the pupils to think abstractly about language and harness the true power it possesses. I love hearing the pupil's own…

Be patient with them when they're learning. Allow themselves to be open to questions and concerns the student may have, but most of all, support them with their studies. I am very: understanding, empathetic, patient and willing to go about different ways in order for the student to fully grasp the content. I know students learn in a variety of…

Instill confidence in the student about their own ability to learn and achieve their academic goals. The tutor should tailor their approach to the needs of each student. - Not everyone learns the same way and the tutor should be prepared to be creative in the ways he or she teaches core concepts or content. Offer something unique! - Rather…

As I mentioned previously, not every student is a quick learner, which is why patience is important when tutoring somebody. Rather than getting impatient and forcing the student to try and understand a concept, find a different method of conveying the concept that they may better understand. Furthermore, while patience is important, the student…

Build confidence, explain concepts clearly, and make students feel comfortable asking questions. I think it's important to be supportive and help students actually understand the content, not just memorise it. I'm patient, calm, and a clear communicator. I'm happy to explain things as many times as needed and in different ways until it clicks.…

Listen, communicate and strategise. I will listen to each student and allow them to outline their concerns, strengths and weaknesses. From this, I will communicate to them my thoughts on these areas and outline strategies for them to address these areas. I am compassionate, driven and empathetic. Be patient, I know from experience it can be hard for students to learn when you feel rushed or your questions are unimportant. Therefore, allowing students to feel as though they can take the time to ask all types of questions to support their confidence is invaluable to an educator. I am patient and judgment-free, I allow students to ask…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is improve their self confidence and encourage them. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is provide every opportunity for them to kindle their own knowledge. As Socrates said, "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." In other words, it is the tutor's job to introduce new knowledge as the base tools and then question the student to allow them to…

To help students understand what they can do or what options they have when they have questions or problems is important. Exclusively giving answers and solutions doesn't help students think critically and understand clearly. Instead, allowing students to figure out what they should do or comprehend certain ideas deeply would be something…

Inside Fairview ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex worked through arranging fractions on a number line and explored the relationship between fractions and decimals.

In Year 10, Emma practised applying the area of a triangle formula to different problems and built confidence with function notation, also touching on physics formulas for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Noah revised exponential functions and logarithms, focusing on growth and decay models using real-world scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Maths, a student's messy working made solutions difficult to follow—"he needs to be a little cautious of the way he sets out his working," one tutor noted.

In Year 12 Biology, another student hesitated to ask clarifying questions during lessons on homeostasis, limiting deeper understanding and feedback use.

Meanwhile, in Year 7, poor time management led to incomplete assignments and stress balancing schoolwork with other activities.

A lack of confidence surfaced across several year levels: students second-guessed themselves or doubted correct steps in algebra and geometry problems, leading to hesitation rather than steady progress.

Recent Achievements

One Fairview Park tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 11 student who used to be hesitant about physics—she's now managing her study time much better and recently celebrated a strong test result that gave her an extra boost.

In Year 10, another student who was once reluctant to speak up has started asking more questions during sessions and is now checking her answers on her own, even tackling extra homework without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously struggled with reading aloud managed to finish an entire chapter from "The Faraway Tree" by herself this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Tea Tree Gully Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Surrey Downs Primary School.
