- Able to help them get past any learning 'roadblocks', or goals, they may have. - Keeping calm, not letting your stress get to a student, furthermore, relieving them of their stress towards what they're learning. - Having each session act as a chance to teach them multiple 'lessons' that relate to each other and finding ways to help the student…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, explain ideas in a way they can understand, and give them the support they need to learn at their own pace. A tutor should listen carefully, be patient, and create a space where the student feels comfortable asking questions. Most of all, a tutor should…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to guide, support, and inspire them. It’s not just about helping them memorise content or score higher marks — it’s about helping them build confidence, curiosity, and the right mindset towards learning. A good tutor should create a space where students feel comfortable…

The best mentors I've had were the ones that pushed me to see my own potential the way they easily could, espicially when I came close to giving up. They reignited my passion for the hard subjects through their own love for the content, and through the way they connected concepts to daily life, bringing the subject to life. I believe a tutor's…

The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

Tutors can support other educators to help students learn how to learn. 1-on-1 support can help shed light on the exact nature of any obstacles a student might experience, which might be missed in a group classroom setting. Leading students patiently through the learning process helps instil confidence. I've received multiple feedback from…

A tutor should focus on empowering the student, rather than simply teaching the content to them, so that when the tutor is not present, the student is still able to motivate themselves and have confidence in their ability without having someone to rely on. I have a positive, active mindset which reflects in my teaching approach, allowing me to…

I think helping to set and then achieve goals for specific students can be so helpful. Building study habits up now can be great for future students, which is why inputting personal experiences and strategies can be useful and important for students when setting their goals. I also think setting a good example for the student should be a priority,…

First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. Supporting students through a stressful period of their life is one of the most important roles of a tutor, you need to be there mentor but especially their friend. Helping them feel to comfortable to make mistakes, and then to learn from said mistakes. I think it is most important to be patient with the students and to ensure they properly understand the concepts being taught before moving onto the next topic. You must also be understanding and empathic with the students to show you can appreciate where they are coming from or why they are thinking a certain way whether it is in the way they…

After the first session I gave Matt some feedback about Mia (via Text). Matt was open to my feedback about Mia’s learning style, and I feel he listened and implemented during the second session. Mia walked away feeling more confident/ comfortable after the second session.
Karen, Fawkner

Inside FawknerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Harry concentrated on algebra skills, working through expressions and equations to build confidence.

For Year 10, recent sessions addressed data distributions by finding the five number summary (including IQR, median, Q1, and Q3), constructing box plots, and applying the 68–95–99.7% rule for normal distributions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student practised multiplication using area models and explored equivalent fractions through hands-on activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 General Maths, one student struggled to locate formulas in a disorganised bound reference book, leading to wasted time during practice SACs—"he spent several minutes flipping pages for the right formula."

In a Year 10 statistics lesson, another student relied heavily on calculators and spreadsheets rather than practicing manual quartile calculations, risking gaps in understanding under exam conditions.

A primary student frequently left homework incomplete and needed prompting to edit written work; when asked to revise spelling errors, "he understood what was wrong but didn't correct it without help," resulting in repeated mistakes on similar tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Fawkner tutor recently noticed Charlize, a Year 12 student, move from confusion to confidently identifying outliers and calculating interquartile ranges using box plots—something she struggled with at the start.

In Year 8 maths, Emmanuel now works through new concepts after just one example and has begun tackling similar questions independently instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Alex in primary school is showing real initiative: he self-corrects punctuation errors during writing tasks and is starting to choose more complex sentence structures on his own. Last session, he finished his letter draft without needing reminders about capital letters or full stops.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fawkner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Matthew's School.
