The most important things are: 1. Provide an environment where genuine learning is encouraged. 2. Provide an environment to enjoy what you do so that it provides the motivation for the student to succeed. 3. Act as a coach / mentor for the student rather than as a teacher. 4. Tailor your approach so that it matches the student's learning…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build confidence in themselves and genuinely believe they can understand the subject. It’s also important to make the content engaging so the student feels motivated to keep learning on their own. Above all, a tutor should create a safe, supportive space where the student feels…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is GUIDING! NOT teaching to solve a single problem. A good teacher will guide a student to figure out techniques by himself. Because especially in Mathematics, approach to all problems is not the same. It's the teacher's duty to guide the student to figure out the techniques to each…

I think as a tutor we should give attention to each student considering their level. A tutor must lead the student through the correct path Instead of trying to re teach what they have already learned at school. have to identify each student and help them through their learning is what I believe the most important thing I have the experience, not…

I believe being patience is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, due to the fact that different student will have different learning rates. Being patient with a student doing their best to solve something shows what really makes a good tutor. I believe that I have the determination, patience and will power as a tutor which is…

In my perspective, I acknowledge the importance of establishing a sense of comfort between a tutor and a student. If this is established, the student will feel more comfortable asking questions and tend to open up more about themselves; whether it be about the marks they are getting that need improvement or whether they're having a rough time…

I strongly believe in individual behavioral and learning differences amongst students. As such, students have their own, sometimes unique, individual attributes which should be closely assessed / monitored by the tutor. My approach to math tuition consists of an individually tailored 3-stage plan: Identify, reform, and sustain. Any average math…

There a many key things that I believe a tutor can do to create a positive impact on their students. One of them I believe is for the tutor to be willing to share their knowledge in any area that the student is struggling with or wants some guidance in. I believe this is crucial as it is one of the main advantages of having a tutor in that they…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure the students are able to appreciate the studies they are undertaking. I feel the most important factor in learning is one's own motivation, and from personal experiences, this is linked with how much the subject is appreciated and enjoyed. Thus I recall how many students feel a…

My strengths are…

For a tutor to make a significant difference to a student's academic performance, I highly believe that they should be able to teach a certain topic in a multitude of ways, in order to assist with the various learning preferences of students. I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is improve the way in which they think about things. I believe that there is no easy way in tutoring, the same as there is no easy way to get the answer. Whenever they are stuck it is our job to guide them through and companying them along. As a tutor, the most integral thing for a student to succeed is their interest in studying. Unless a student does not want to learn and succeed, they cannot achieve this, so it is important for tutors to inspire and encourage students during sessions. Provide motivation and help develop a passion (or at least an appreciation) for Mathematics. Success would be more likely if the student is enjoying the subject matter. Inside Ferny CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on multiplying larger numbers and using area and perimeter, then later focused on times tables fluency, fractions (including adding and simplifying), and reading coordinates on maps.

Year 8 student Vien tackled algebraic skills such as expanding and factorising expressions along with combining like terms, while also practicing substitution in algebraic evaluation.

For Year 10, Tanya revised linear relations—plotting graphs from equations—and strengthened understanding of the turning point form for parabolic graphs.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when revising algebra and indices, hesitated to use unfamiliar methods and often defaulted to memorized rules—"she still needs time to understand how to simplify surds," a tutor noted, which meant her written working was patchy and she skipped showing key steps.

In Year 10 English, one student rushed sentence construction during essay planning; as observed, "still needs to practice slowing down when constructing sentences."

Meanwhile, a senior maths student sometimes prioritized easier questions in revision sessions rather than tackling new graph types or exam-style problems, leaving complex applications less practiced by the end of each lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Ferny Creek tutor noticed a real shift in Marni, a Year 10 student who previously struggled to see her mistakes—she's now able to pinpoint exactly where she went wrong in linear algebra and self-corrects during lessons.

In another session, Sophia, also in high school, showed new consistency by working through increasingly tough equations with fewer errors and started double-checking her steps without prompting.

Meanwhile, Daniel in Year 5 has become much more willing to try challenging maths problems; last week he finished a set independently of multi-digit multiplication questions for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ferny Creek Primary School.
