The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is create a genine and authentic relationship. This allows the student to trust the tutor and with trust communication will be very easy. The tutor will be able to recognize the students' strength and weaknesses and work well with them. I recently finished high school and have only just…

Tutors are the ones who shape the future of a child. Through their knowledge they help students to overcome their subjects by providing conceptual clarity. I feel tutors are like air traffic controllers who give the right direction and motivation to their students to help them fly in their life. Not only imparting knowledge is important, a tutor…

The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, mentally (on an academic level) and emotionally. This includes ensuring that the student actually comprehends the work - rather than just saying so. Just as importantly, a tutor must be able to emotionally support the student, making sure they are comfortable enough to voice their…

I consider building a strong relationship with students as a big part of tutoring. Tutors are in a unique position where they aren't teachers nor parents which means that we are here to help the students. However, keeping students motivated is a responsibility tutors must hold in a high regard as it is key to a student success. By building a…

This not only makes the learning process for the student more…

I strongly believe every student has it in them to excel should they choose to . In addition to this every student has a different method of learning. Identifying it & helping them understand…

I think improving a student's confidence is the most important thing. I've just seen so many students in the past give up when they see a problem, but if you can teach them to push past this it helps them in this class and in future problem solving scenarios. Being really punctual. When a student wants an appointment with a tutor, the tutor should come on time. Not only that, considering the student's perspective is really important. In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

A tutor should always motivate a student even if he/she is not performing well. A tutor should identify the strength of the student and work accordingly. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
