Be patient. Tutors must always be patient with students as both stand on different levels in education and understanding. What may have come easily to the tutor may not come so easily for the student. Furthermore, what seems extremely easy to the tutor may be very hard for their student. Therefore, it is imperative that the tutor is patient in…

In my opinion, the most important things a tutor can do for a student would be to build confidence and make learning approachable according to the learning style of the student. A tutor should be able to create a safe space where mistakes are okay and questions are encouraged. A tutor should guide the students to discover the answers rather than…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide a relaxing environment for them to learn. I will consider myself as a buddy/friend with my student instead of a teacher and guide them through their learning journey instead of delivering knowledge on a command based which they experience in school I think my strength is that…

I see being a one-on-one tutor who has the capacity to give quality time and attention to students as one of the most important things for a student - a tutor can go in-depth on certain topics, can asnwer specific questions, and can act as a personal cheerleader to motivate students. Often simply having someone to help and guide them other than a…

A tutor is basically a role model for the student. If a tutor can quickly solve anonymous problem then student can definitely be motivated and solve there sums. Additionally, Tutor should also connect with the student so that student can discuss the issues faced by them before the exam. Tutors should conduct regular test and provide quick…

Give them confidence that they can succeed. I believe with that with the right mindset almost anyone can succeed. Often students just lack confidence in their abilities which results in less effort in the unit and thus worse results. I am passionate about what I do. I care about my job and the students I tutor. I want them to do well and I think…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be kind and patient with a student. Tutoring can be frustrating but a tutor must never make their student feel bad or insecure even when they themselves are a bit agitated. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear explanations, build their confidence, and create a supportive learning environment. As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

I think encouraging the student is the most important thing a tutor can do even more than results as if the student begins to become more inquisitive and enterprising in their own learning they will do better overall. Carolyn, Kew

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
