I think my strengths are being able to communicate effectively with children or those younger than me as I have a lot of experience coaching younger…

There are 2 jobs of a tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. I have a really deep understanding in all concepts of maths and physics (high school level), and I'm really good at breaking them down into simpler bits. I also know the importance of practicing these…

The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to be understanding and friendly to them so that they don't hesitate to share their problems. focusing more on the topics they find difficult to understand and being there for them for as long as they need is the best thing a tutor can do. My strength as a tutor is I understand math can be…

Patience and kindness. At the end of the day, I think what matters the most is not how many percentages the student's grades have risen, but more about how "healthy" the relationship between the tutor and the student is so that they can always ask for help when needed I am a persistent person and I don't give up easily. I believe my greatest…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to share his/her knowledge, ensure the difficulties are solved together, students could enjoy the learning process, and students understand why they are studying (importance of education). And this is all possible with a tutor with relevant subject knowledge and ability to position…

I believe it depends highly on the students understanding and their level of education. However in saying this, the ability to create interest and enjoyment in a subject is the most important. As from my own experience enjoying a subject and being interested in the topic helps greatly in motivating a person to understand and achieve well in it. I…

The tutor has so many key responsibilities and actions to do. As he/she needs to aware that individuals are understanding, there should be effective communication, setting realistic goals, creating a supportive environment and also providing them a constructive feedback. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student isn't to remove the obstacles that hold them back, but to convince them that they can remove them themselves. I am good at adapting how I explain things. One of my issues with many of my teachers was that they would only teach their material in one way, the issue of teaching a whole class…

For me it is important for tutor to be able to encourage and make the student enjoy learning. Because in order for students to learn faster, they would need to be willing to digest the new knowledge and information given by the tutor. Furthermore, it is important for tutor to look at a problem from many different perspective, because one point of…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student feel confident in their own abilities. It's not just about getting the right answer — it’s about helping them understand why it works, and building up their mindset so they believe they can improve. Most importantly a teacher can create a safe learning environment where the child is not afraid to ask questions. Encouraging them to ask questions will make them more confident and as a teacher its my duty to make them feel like they can trust an rely on me. I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be proud of all the improvements the student has done. It's not about congratulating them for being a high achieving student. To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. Understanding how children learn on an individual basis (including factoring in neurodivergency) rather than a blanket…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
