As a tutor, I believe the most important thing is to help one who helps others to digest concepts and knowledge in an interactive and friendly environment while retaining their interest to study the knowledge. Also, I am also the one who analyse knowledge and mistake and seeks improvement in the exam preparation period, as I would help the student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and encouraging of the abilities they already have, while pushing them to learn and achieve as much as they can. I believe my biggest strengths to be my patience as a teacher, and my ability to tackle different problems from various angles. I find it better to spend time…

tutor is a one who can create a child's future and at the same time can destroy it, tutor should be the one who should solve the rubix cube that is inside a student's mind. he should be thorough with his teaching so that when it comes to explaining things the student's shouldn't get confused with that. he/she should have all the tricks up their…

In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

Understand the student's way of thinking. Every student deserves attention from a tutor to channel their thoughts in the right direction. It is the primary responsibility of a tutor to help students strengthen their concepts and build strong fundamentals in subjects. In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. I am self-directed, energetic, and enthusiastic. I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering + Management…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in their learning. Many students already have the ability to succeed but just need someone to guide them and explain things in a way that makes sense. Many tutors can simply explain content and answer questions, but I believe a great tutor inspires a passion for the field of study in the student. Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

A good tutor should be able to clearly explain concepts and methods to their students, and should be able to answer any questions a student has and be prepared before the tutoring session for these questions. Rankin, Fitzroy North

Inside Fitzroy NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on calculating percentage increases and decreases as well as reviewing measurement test questions to strengthen understanding.

In Year 9, Favour focused on solving simultaneous equations and applying linear graphs to word problems using real-life scenarios.

Meanwhile, Queen, also in Year 9, practised translating worded questions into linear equations and revising methods for finding gradients and graphing lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often avoided showing working in algebra, which led to missed sign errors and made it hard to trace mistakes—"he tried to solve in his head instead of using paper," a tutor noted.

In Year 11, one student left homework incomplete due to a busy week; as a result, they struggled to apply new concepts confidently in class.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner hesitated to ask for clarification when confused by fractions or ratios, leading to gaps that slowed progress in financial maths topics. The reluctance to vocalize reasoning during problem-solving also limited feedback opportunities.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy North tutor recently noticed Alannah begin assigning her own revision tasks before assessments and working independently—previously she'd needed more direction during sessions.

In another case, Moses in Year 7 has shifted from quietly struggling with statistics to now asking for clarification when stuck and finishing whole sets of descriptive statistics questions on his own by the end of the lesson.

For a younger student, Leon's reluctance toward long division faded after he saw he could do it easily; now he works through multi-digit multiplication and division confidently without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fitzroy North Primary School.
