I think the most important thing is helping students truly understand concepts rather than just memorising solutions. A good tutor should build a student's confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a supportive space where they feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. My main strengths are clear communication,…

I think that some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to give them motivation to practice in the subject and to offer another perspective of a subject if the initial one wasn't clicking with the student. I think my biggest strengths as a tutor are my ability to adapt my teaching methods to suit both the specific student…

On a surface level outlook a tutor is just meant to teach their students and be on their way. But in my perspective, there is more to it than just teaching. A tutor is about being a capable mentor that identifies the student's weaknesses in class and mentally so there is always something the student can work upon both academically and mentally.…

As per my opinion, I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be their friend and guide and help them as their friend. More often than not, students fear approaching tutors. But if you have maintained a friendly relation with your students, your students will not hesitate in coming and speaking with you. This way, a…

Tutors can make the students to understand the topic from the scratch, so as to make sure the kid is able to solve the problems on its own. In this way, student excels in the class at school, and it helps in boosting up the confidence. After working for overall 2 years with kids, I have become really patient and understand and read when and which…

I believe as a tutor, providing kids with a safe space for kids to openly ask questions, allow them to make mistakes and learn from them is the most important thing. Most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel that their all queries are valid and making them ask more and more questions without hesitation. Also patiently answering thier queries is most important. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, make learning less intimidating,…

The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In addition to this, having a practical approach other than the traditional teaching style is…

I think a tutor can inspire the students and teach them the importance of knowledge. I also think the students many a times look up to their teachers as role models. So a tutor should also be a persona that they imitate! And hence it's the duty of the teacher to set a good example in front of their students for them to learn and grow! I can be…

Allowing the students to display the knowledge they have learnt is important to ensure that they indeed have learnt. There is always a chance the student just says they are fine with the content in the rush to move on, but giving them the time to explain what they have learnt will ensure the session has been effective. My patience gives the…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. A tutor must recognise the level of understanding of a student and then explain concepts to that level. This will ensure progress of the student. 1) I have patience to keep explaining till the student understands it. 2) I teach each student differently based on their level of understanding. 3) I prepare myself well before the session, try to…

I think that being patient and empathetic are two of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Inside FootscrayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia focused on solving problems involving the volume of cylinders and explored area and circumference of circles, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

In Year 8, Liam practiced linear relationships by plotting equations on coordinate grids and worked through questions on finding equations of lines.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ava reviewed angle types—such as complementary and supplementary angles—and estimated degrees using protractors for hands-on learning.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 trigonometry, a student hesitated to attempt challenging problems, focusing mainly on familiar examples—this limited exposure to multi-step scenarios.

For a Year 3 multiplication task, over-reliance on counting rather than recalling tables slowed progress and led to errors ("Need to learn by heart the multiplication table").

In Year 10 data evaluation, incomplete practice with interpreting graphs meant patterns were sometimes missed.

During Year 8 decimal work, one tutor noted: "Need to be more careful while counting the number to put the decimal point and index number." These process gaps often left some questions unanswered or concepts only partly grasped in-session.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Footscray noticed a big shift with one high school student who, after struggling to estimate angles without tools, now confidently judges them by eye and checks his work independently.

Another Year 9 student who used to hesitate when stuck on problems has started raising questions mid-session and fixing mistakes right away, instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, a younger student finally cleared up confusion about range and median—after weeks of guessing, he now explains the difference out loud before solving each problem.

Last week, one finished all his homework in just 20 minutes and asked for extra exercises.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Footscray Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray High School - Barkly Campus.
