1. Be prepared. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to be prepared for the session. That includes preparing the lesson beforehand and getting everything ready. 2. Reviewing the fundamentals with the students. This means not jumping to advanced topics with the students when they might need a little refresher on the subject. In math, it is…

Confidence and a sense of autonomy are critical components of a developing student and are the most important foundations a tutor can provide. Discipline and organisation are also important in seeing consistent growth in a student. However, building a strong and friendly relationship that is long-lasting is always necessary to see any progress in…

Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence and strategies to tackle problems even when you, as a tutor, are not there. I do this by offering skills and strategies rather than answers, and allowing students to have a go at a problem themselves before stepping in. As well as skills, confidence is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is analyzing them and figuring out their strengths and aspects where they need support the most. Being not just a teacher, but a mentor, a model of inspiration in their life to look forward to. The most important thing is building understanding, not just getting to the right answer — a student should walk away knowing why something works, not just what to write down. Patience matters just as much: making sure a student never feels judged for not getting something straight away. And I think a good tutor builds confidence alongside…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build a foundation of confidence and independent thinking. Rather than simply providing the correct answers, a tutor should guide a student through the logic of a problem so they can eventually solve it on their own. It is also vital to build a strong rapport where the student feels…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

My students always have so much fun in my classes. I think it is important, because when students are enjoying themselves in the learning process, it makes it so much easier to learn. It is crucial for teachers to be patient with students who are learning fresh topics as it takes time to process new information. Students can become distracted or find the subject/topic with no interest, this gives an important responsibility for a tutor to be engaging and encouraging for students to strive for learning. I also believe if the…

Inside Forest LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake worked on recognising fractions using the Fraction Run game and completed reading comprehension activities on Thunder and Lightning, as well as vertical algorithms for maths.

Year 8 focused on algebra with lessons covering adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, factorisation, and contextual problem solving using equations.

For Year 5, Aditi practised imaginative story writing by building a story arc in her short story "Turkey Head" and strengthened grammar skills through tense revision and vocabulary extension games.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student was reluctant to attempt persuasive writing, needing encouragement to start, and often hesitated with challenging maths reasoning tasks—"he doubted his ability and was slow to begin," noted a tutor.

In Year 7 maths, one student's distraction with online features like BitPaper tabs led to unfinished algorithms and interruptions in focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student tackling algebra sometimes avoided self-editing, leaving errors uncorrected and missing feedback opportunities.

For a senior (Year 11) preparing for exams, over-reliance on calculators slowed manual calculation speed during factorization drills; this made timed practice less effective and increased anxiety under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Forest Lodge noticed that a Year 9 student who used to procrastinate now attempts answers straight away, even when unsure—showing more initiative and less hesitation than before.

In another session, a Year 11 student who often struggled to focus was able to finish all their assigned homework without reminders and even asked for extra practice questions on topics they'd previously avoided.

For a younger learner in Year 4, using a visible "to-do" list helped him independently organise his tasks and move from one activity to the next with much less prompting than earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forest Lodge Public School.
