Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

Tutors should be able to convey information in a way that not only makes sense, but engages the student. A tutor should be as eager about the subject they are teaching as they are knowledgeable of the topic, and should strive to convey this excitement and passion through their teaching. The ability to help a student not only understand, but love…

A tutor must give a student confidence and help them to not be overwhelmed by new topics. Once a student believes they can learn something, it is much easier to actually learn it. Tutors must also be personal and understand what method of teaching is most effective for each individual. As a recently graduated student, I am able to understand how…

Be patient if they don't understand something at first, and if they are still struggling with the concept after a while, trying teaching it to them in a different way so that they do understand. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just to teach them content - its essential to help a student become more self-sufficient in the field they are studying, and to teach them how to learn more effectively. For example, when teaching a child mathematics, I view simply teaching the content as not enough, as if you…

I believe it is integral to grasp the individual students learning style and tailor my lessons accordingly. As a part of this, it's also important to learn what doesn't work for them, and avoid these techniques. I think the most important quality to bring to tuition is a sense of drive to motivate students. Often High school students are unaware of the importance or usefulness of academics and I believe it is important to also educate them on why it is important to achieve good grades. High academic achievement can give a student a plethora of pathways in…

Local Reviews

Will is maths tutoring both of my children (age 11 and 13) by video conference (Zoom) during the Covid 19 outbreak. This is working just as well as when we had Will sitting next to us and he is doing a wonderful job in increasing both of my children's confidence in maths. With them being at home full time now, they are really benefiting from this weekly one on one tutoring. I would highly recommend Will as a maths tutor.

Inside GaythorneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoe focused on calculating the area of various shapes and applying Pythagoras' theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems.

For Year 9, Tom worked through expanding algebraic brackets and simplifying linear expressions, with extra practice using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Sam practised recognising number patterns and worked with decimals and fractions during targeted activities to build confidence in foundational maths skills.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated when writing extended responses in a maths assignment, often second-guessing herself—she knew the content but was unsure about explaining why steps were taken. This led to incomplete explanations and lost marks for reasoning.

In Year 8, messy working made it hard to trace errors in algebra, as noted: setting out could be refined.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's slow pace meant not all questions were finished during lessons, especially with measurement tasks.

For one primary student, frustration and boredom with Maths caused her to disengage completely when faced with non-routine problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Gaythorne recently saw Liz, a Year 9 student, move from relying on guesswork with algebra to independently expanding and simplifying brackets—something she'd previously found confusing.

In another session, Liz prepared for her maths assignment by identifying her own mistakes and explaining exactly how she planned to fix them, which is a big shift from earlier weeks when she waited for guidance.

At the primary level, one student who struggled with reading instructions now asks clarifying questions before starting tasks; last lesson, he completed all spelling words without skipping any steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitchelton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hillbrook Anglican School.
