I believe the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to be empathetic. I remember my own struggles with learning and the shame that discouraged me from trying. I want my students to feel that their personal needs are important and to understand that intelligence isn't measured by the time or effort it takes to learn…

In my opinion the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to make the subjects the student is struggling with more fun. To take the anxiety out of a problem and turn it into confidence is incredibly important for the students success. I believe that through my extensive experience in tutoring and mentoring students of various…

Identifying the students' weaknesses is the most important. If you don't know their weaknesses, it would be difficult to target a specific area, which consequently makes the students unable to improve. I have been a high achiever in mathematical Olympiads, meaning I have an extremely thorough understanding of most topics in the subject. As a…

Believing in your student has to be one of the most important things a biology tutor can do as you help the student know that nothing is impossible and they can do it all. I also think patience is also important as everyone learns differently and at various paces. I believe I am easy to communicate with. In terms of communicating with parents, my…

As a biology tutor, I believe that it is important to be patient with students and allow them to grasp the concept on their own, albeit with a firm guiding hand, as I find that this allows the pupil to adopt a more proactive and self-sufficient mindset. My experience with this method often found a great deal of pride and accomplishment within both…

I consider encouragement and patience as the most important things a biology tutor can do for a student. As school can be stressful, being supportive and persistent toward the student is beneficial and can make them more receptive to wanting to learn. Having patience is also very important for tutors as some students may not understand a concept…

Having a strong internal drive to learn and micro-teaching skills I think is the key role in tutoring. In my opinion, tutoring is not only teaching but also a part of learning experience that enables us to recall and applying the knowledge we have because it is a proof that we have understood what we have already learned. Micro-skill is the second…

Local Reviews

Will is maths tutoring both of my children (age 11 and 13) by video conference (Zoom) during the Covid 19 outbreak. This is working just as well as when we had Will sitting next to us and he is doing a wonderful job in increasing both of my children's confidence in maths. With them being at home full time now, they are really benefiting from this weekly one on one tutoring. I would highly recommend Will as a maths tutor.

Inside GaythorneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Zoe focused on calculating the area of various shapes and applying Pythagoras' theorem to solve right-angled triangle problems.

For Year 9, Tom worked through expanding algebraic brackets and simplifying linear expressions, with extra practice using step-by-step examples.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Sam practised recognising number patterns and worked with decimals and fractions during targeted activities to build confidence in foundational maths skills.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated when writing extended responses in a maths assignment, often second-guessing herself—she knew the content but was unsure about explaining why steps were taken. This led to incomplete explanations and lost marks for reasoning.

In Year 8, messy working made it hard to trace errors in algebra, as noted: setting out could be refined.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student's slow pace meant not all questions were finished during lessons, especially with measurement tasks.

For one primary student, frustration and boredom with Maths caused her to disengage completely when faced with non-routine problems.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Gaythorne recently saw Liz, a Year 9 student, move from relying on guesswork with algebra to independently expanding and simplifying brackets—something she'd previously found confusing.

In another session, Liz prepared for her maths assignment by identifying her own mistakes and explaining exactly how she planned to fix them, which is a big shift from earlier weeks when she waited for guidance.

At the primary level, one student who struggled with reading instructions now asks clarifying questions before starting tasks; last lesson, he completed all spelling words without skipping any steps.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitchelton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hillbrook Anglican School.
