The most important thing is for a tutor to understand the student and listen to them. They need to accomodate to what the student thinks they need work on, but a tutor should also offer suggestions as well as motivate their student, encouraging them and helping them to be the best they can be. My strengths would be that I am a good motivator and I…

To provide communication, patience and compassion. It is very important for tutors to accept each student for their own strengths and shortcomings in order to help students perform well academically. It also is important to be creative with techniques and materials that are not used in a classroom setting. Examples of this are customizing reading…

I believe patience and empathy toward students who are struggling is one of the most important factors while being a tutor. I also posses organisational and planning skills so that I can structure lessons and prepare for sessions effectively so that all sessions are optimised. Adaptation to a student’s learning pace is also very crucial as each…

Consistency and patience can reinvent a subject and allow the student to be more receptive to the content that is being taught. As the student continues to improve, they will develop an…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the skills to be confident in their own learning. I have seen first hand that for a student, struggling at school is not only academically unadvisable, but can cause great anxiety and difficulty at school. Some skills come easier to some students than others, and there…

A good tutor should firstly ensure that the student has a solid grasp of the foundational knowledge underpinning their subject, before moving on to teach more complex concepts. This is because oftentimes a subject's more advanced concepts will draw heavily from assumed foundational knowledge. Additionally a tutor can instill confidence in a…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is be encouraging towards a student; often students get tutoring in a subject they are struggling in and are already mentally finding it difficult so it is critical a tutor positively encourages them and reminds them of their improvement. One of the most important roles of a tutor is to provide students with a framework of learning techniques and methods that will remain applicable in future areas of study. I consider the most important thing a tutor can for a student is to lead them on a path so that they might discover the answer themselves, and not give them the answer straight out. Inside Glen OsmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Lucy worked on reviewing index laws and practiced converting fractional indices to surds, as well as multiplying and dividing fractions.

In Year 10, Maja focused on linear relations by exploring the equation y = mx + c, finding gradients and intercepts, and then moved onto graphing these functions.

For Year 11 Chemistry and Maths, Divyanshu tackled naming organic compounds with carboxyl, carbonyl, and hydroxyl groups in chemistry, while in maths he learned how to derive e^x and e^f(x) using differentiation rules.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student had difficulty recalling key chemical equations during test revision, especially for ocean acidification and exoskeleton formation—"memorising the specific reactions was a sticking point," noted one tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, skipping steps when differentiating under time pressure led to persistent sign errors, particularly with chain rule and kinematics problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often struggled to translate worded maths problems into equations; the first step alone felt overwhelming.

For English in Year 10, reliance on copying large slabs of quotes rather than synthesising ideas slowed essay progress and limited original analysis.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Osmond tutoring session saw a Year 12 student who had struggled to organise his chemistry answers now confidently providing concise, accurate explanations about spectroscopy and logarithmic rules without prompting.

Another tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 English student: where he once barely wrote at all, last week he completed a full-length essay independently and even scored an A on his first assignment.

In Year 6 maths, one student who used to avoid challenging problems is now attempting fraction factorisation exercises without hesitation and recently managed to factorise equations like 8x+4 on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fullarton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seymour College.
