The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop the student's interest in and improve their attitude towards a subject. Furthermore, the tutor can equip the student with different strategies so they can work independently. I think my strengths lay in making the work engaging for the person by incorporating their interests.…

Explain things so that a student fully understands and is able to apply their knowledge to questions, I don't want to just teach memorisation or remembering steps, because I believe actually understanding what you are doing is much more worthwhile. I have completed Maths Specialist, Maths Methods, Physics and Economics in high school and achieved…

Listening to what a student wants and communicating a solution in a way they can understand. Without understanding their needs, you can not provide the right kind of "help". Tutors can also provide a good learning environment by building a friendly relationship with students. I can explain complex problems and concepts in the simplest way in which…

To keep it short and simple, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow them to reach their full potential and to give them all the confidence and skills required to do this. As a tutor some of my strengths include having good communication skills, being able to speak up and having a warm & friendly personality. In school my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not make them feel stupid or incapable of figuring things out. The more you can celebrate their small successes, the more confident they will be to keep taking risks and try harder in their learning. I am patient and try to talk to students at their level. It's important to let kids…

Reminding them they are not their enemy, and that they are on the same side. A lot of students might be forced into tuition. As a tutor, I have to create a meaningful relationship with my student, where I provide a safe space for them to learn, as they are. Patience, understanding and adaptability. No one person is the same, no one student of mine…

It is important to motivate them and help them understand the importance of scoring well. This allows them to choose their education and career path earlier on. It is also important to be their friend and listen to what they have to say, to acknowledge and validate their thoughts and opinions. This makes them a better critical thinker. I am…

I think the most important thing is to be simple - not confuse the child with an overwhelming amount of information but rather take things slowly and ask directed questions to take them to each step of the answer. Over the course of a tutor's time with a student, the most important skill they can provide is the ability to think both critically and universally, fueled by a hunger for knowledge. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is leaving them with a range of tools for study that they can use on their own at school or if I’m not around. The student being able to use study techniques that I have taught them on their own accord is what I would aim to achieve. My strengths as a tutor would have to be my…

I consider the ability to connect and inspire the students to be the most important thing. Inside GlendaloughTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Michael focused on multiplication and division strategies, including using number lines to visualise equal groups.

In Year 6, Grace worked through fractions and decimals, applying these to solve everyday money problems.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Lily tackled perimeter and area calculations alongside practice with algebraic expressions for missing numbers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without having attempted their homework, which meant less time could be spent addressing specific difficulties in algebra.

In Year 10, one student struggled to plan effectively for a test—"he didn't check his answers before submitting," as noted—which led to repeated calculation errors in trigonometry questions.

For a Year 4 learner, working in her head rather than writing steps down caused forgotten calculations during long division.

Another senior student showed declining focus after setbacks; "her concentration was good for the first half but faded," making it harder to master advanced fractions by session's end.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glendalough recently saw a Year 10 student who had previously struggled with algebra start to grasp the process of solving equations independently, even choosing to tackle more challenging questions without prompting.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to avoid worded maths problems now approaches them confidently and can break down double-digit multiplication tasks with far less hesitation.

Meanwhile, one of our younger students, after weeks of shyness about reading aloud, surprised her tutor by volunteering to read the next chapter during their session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cambridge Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chrysalis Montessori School.
