I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is an ability to relate to students and to make them feel comfortable, enticing them to learn. From here, this factor will allow students to learn to the best of their ability and make the most of their time with the tutor. As a tutor, my main strength would be my ability to help students…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build the student's confidence and make them feel safe to ask questions without judgement. Beyond just teaching content, a tutor should help students develop problem-solving skills they can apply independently. It's also important to listen to each student, understand where they are…

Be adaptable. Everyone learns differently and it is the tutor's job to be able to work with the different learning styles. I find that this is the most challenging to get the grasp of as it varies widely across all sorts of students, however, once a tutor learns how a student processes different problems and is able to cater their explanations;…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is to motivate and encourage them to do their best. I believe that results are mostly achieved through the effort of the students themselves, so as a tutor I try my best to cover all the concepts and to provide my students with support materials, but I also make sure that my students…

Understanding and learning about the child's needs and adapting your teaching style to best suit their needs. When I went to tutoring, I had the best experience by having a very motivated, interactive and interesting tutor. I will try to become one of them though I'm still yet to gain formal experience of tutoring In addition,…

Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. The most important thing a tutor can do is to actually listen to their student. If they are not being receptive to feedback, and the student is not learning, then there is no progress being made. Rather, there has to be an active conversation between tutor and student that helps communicate the student's needs. I think I'm really receptive to a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

Inside Glenelg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ciara focused on addition and subtraction with money, practicing borrowing numbers and tackling worded problem-solving tasks.

For Year 7, Josh worked through fraction operations including addition, subtraction, and multiplication using examples from homework and targeted practice sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zara revised indices in preparation for an upcoming test and explored square roots along with highest common factor concepts through direct calculation exercises.

Recent Challenges

Incomplete homework was a consistent challenge across several years. For example, in Year 5, "student still did not complete homework," leading to ongoing confusion with double-digit multiplication.

In Year 8, missed homework meant the student struggled to recall fraction methods and couldn't show working when asked.

A Year 10 student often waited for peers' answers rather than attempting questions independently; as one tutor observed, "she waited for Ella before answering because she was unsure."

During problem-solving in Year 7, guessing or giving up too quickly meant time was lost re-explaining steps instead of building confidence with complex tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg North tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to keep quiet when confused now speaks up whenever she's stuck, especially during problem-solving questions—last session she asked for help and then finished all ten division quiz problems correctly.

In Year 8, another student who often guessed at answers has started checking her work with notes from previous weeks and talks through calculations out loud; she completed her homework independently for the first time.

A younger student, previously unsure about shape names, was able to confidently identify and count sides, faces, and edges by relating them to objects around the house.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Leonards Primary School.
