Identifying the student's strengths and weaknesses is crucial. I would ensure their strengths are reflected through their work and that we are spending extra time focusing on the weaker areas. It is vital that tutors are approachable, and can come from a place of understanding when students seek to overcome certain educational hurdles. Whilst it is also important for tutors to have a deep understanding of the subject they are tutoring, they should also be able to emphasise that mistakes and failure are a natural part of the learning…

We are very happy with everything and things are going well. James is a great tutor and my son has been very comfortable and getting a lot out of the tutoring every week.
Christina, Somerton Park

Inside Glenelg SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student James worked through NAPLAN numeracy practice, focusing on ordering decimal numbers to three places and exploring the connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

In Year 10, Alex tackled simultaneous equations by solving using both graphical and algebraic methods, and reviewed functions and relations as part of their algebra work.

For Year 5, Finn practised X3 and X5 multiplication facts along with subtraction of decimal numbers to two places with exchanging, while also beginning to learn about metric prefixes for units of measurement.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student struggled to keep derivative and anti-derivative formulas distinct during calculus sessions; as a tutor noted, "he mixed up the stuff," which led to repeated confusion in problem-solving.

In Year 9, James hesitated with exponential equations because key formulas weren't memorized—each unfamiliar question meant extra time flipping through notes instead of building confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student found subtraction with exchanging daunting, particularly when multi-step word problems required both careful layout and number fact recall.

After holidays, one Year 5 learner needed targeted revision just to refresh basic times tables before tackling new content.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Glenelg South recently noticed some great shifts: a Year 9 student who used to get stuck on ratio questions now tackles them independently and even asked for extra practice problems this week.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who struggled with setting up her first assignment was able to solve most of the next two assignments on her own after learning new strategies.

On the primary side, one younger student who previously guessed at unknown words during reading is now pausing to use word attack skills and checking punctuation out loud as he reads.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenelg Primary School.
