I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

Making a student learn and fully comprehend a subject matter while not belittling them in the process, but rather motivating them and getting them to enjoy learning about that subject. I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. Its okay to make mistakes but if your student is afraid of you , they would never ask questions and will be afraid to make mistakes so the tutor will never be able to…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I consider the ability to communicate in the student's eye level to be the essential as a tutor. For example, a tutor should be able to support students based on their level of education and motivation. My strength as a tutor is my ability to communicate and explain difficult concepts as simple as possible. Also, I take tutoring as an opportunity…

Firstly, the most important thing that a tutor should do is build up confidence in their kids that they have the potential to achieve their goals and are destined for the best. This instantly boosts up the kids for striving for accuracy and their dreams. Secondly, a tutor should never be a demotivator in any manner. This is important as any…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

Inside GlenungaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Louis practised subtraction and worked on understanding the concept of times tables, focusing especially on the 2s, using hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

Year 10 student Maja tackled financial maths by working through worded problems involving discounts and percentage increases in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam reviewed calculus concepts such as derivatives and addressed previous challenges with logarithms by applying these skills to more complex questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left working out of algebra solutions, admitting, "I just get lazy when writing and choose the easier route," which made it harder to catch errors with negatives.

In Year 11 English, a student's essay drafts showed persistent run-on sentences—despite being able to identify them aloud, he struggled to fix them independently on his iPad.

A Year 9 student relied heavily on quoting large slabs of text in history assignments rather than summarising ideas in his own words.

In Year 7 maths, times tables gaps led to slow progress solving fraction problems and meant more time spent counting than reasoning through new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Glenunga tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who previously struggled to write at length; last week, he completed an entire essay independently, something he'd never managed before.

In senior maths, a high schooler who used to hesitate with statistics scored 85 on his most recent assessment—well above his previous result—and has begun setting personal targets for the next exam.

Meanwhile, a younger student who often guessed quietly when stuck now openly asks for help and explains her thinking during problem-solving tasks. She finished all her addition questions without needing prompts this session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fullarton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenunga International High School.
