I think that tutors need to be supportive of their students, which can only be achieved by creating trust with them. By getting to know students, their goals, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their personalities and work styles, a tutor should aim to know a student so that the student is able to receive support from someone they know and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only help them understand the lessons, but assist them in the development of individual thought. My patience is extensive as I believe that the longer the struggle, the better the reward. However, I also believe that being able to communicate in various difference ways in…

Tutor's should prioritise the relationship between the student and their learning. To be consistently achieving learning goals and improving their overall knowledge, students have to a hold passion and love for their work. Its their tutor's job to build a space where the individual builds an interest and passion to learn. Therefore, working step…

Helping understanding topics and key areas is important, however for me, giving students the confidence to approach new topics with a 'can-do' attitude helps them in wider areas of their life and increases their self belief. Unleashing the potential that they may not realise they have. I consider myself a strong tutor due to my qualities of being…

Being patient in allowing students to fully grasp a topic or idea before proceeding. Often students have topics and subjects that have been neglected by the schooling system, and sometimes it is necessary to move backward before we go forward. I have been a student myself for 13 years and have an acute understanding of what assists myself and…

If students aren’t interested in mathematics or other subjects, a tutor can help to increase their knowledge, and it can increase their interest in the subject(s). The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to hear and understand their concerns in the chosen subject. Not regurgitate the same information given on google or at schools regarding their difficult topics, but instead to approach the student and the lesson with the ambition to simplify complexities in your own intuitive way. This is with respect to the student's preferential medium for learning, which you as a tutor need to manipulate effectively to…

Give them the understanding and also the encouragement to succeed. Doing the work for the child isn't the way a child will learn. A tutor should give honest time and effort to share the knowledge with his students.A tutor should also learn how to teach studnets based in their strengths and weaknesses. Inside Gregory HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Amelia focused on positive and negative integers using number lines, along with strategies for rounding numbers to different digit places.

In Year 8, Grace worked through laws of indices—both multiplication and addition—and revised algebraic techniques like simplifying expressions and solving linear equations, sometimes using past test questions for extra practice.

For Year 9, Nishta covered financial mathematics including calculating tax from bracket tables and practiced applying formulas for bonuses and commissions in a range of problem-solving scenarios.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on Pythagoras' Theorem was advised not to overwrite answers and to write formulae before starting—messy layout made it hard to catch calculation slips.

In Year 10, a student tackling algebraic fractions avoided writing full steps, as one tutor noted, "she skipped setting out her working, which led to rounding errors."

Meanwhile, an older student preparing for advanced algebra assessments had incomplete homework practice; this limited her ability to recall formulas under test conditions.

Across grades, missing or unfinished practice sums meant students often entered lessons without the familiarity needed for new problem types.

Recent Achievements

One Gregory Hills tutor saw a real turnaround with Mia, a high school student who previously hesitated to ask for help—she now uses "pen to paper" strategies and talks through problems instead of staying silent.

Analiese, also in high school, moved from being anxious about word problems to actually enjoying them after learning some new techniques; she worked out all her practice questions on her own last session.

In primary years, Ifra went from making repeated errors on arithmetic laws to fixing those mistakes independently and completing the assigned work without extra prompts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Narellan Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Gregory Hills Public School.
