The most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to be understanding and friendly to them so that they don't hesitate to share their problems. focusing more on the topics they find difficult to understand and being there for them for as long as they need is the best thing a tutor can do. Build real understanding rather than memorisation, and build the student's confidence alongside it. My personal measure of whether a student has actually learned something is whether they could turn around and explain it to someone else. I think a good tutor also needs to be patient and encouraging, especially when a student is struggling, because…

I think the most important thing for a student is being able to connect with them on their wavelength, engaging their interest and focusing on their capabilities as a person rather than using a "one size fits all" approach. I am very passionate and empathetic which helps students who are otherwise struggling. I am also hardworking and have a…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

A tutor can assist student in understanding the concepts more clearly and a tutor can mold a student's focus on the subject. A tutor is a constant reminder for a student to choose the right techniques for study. A tutor can explain the nuances of not just learning concepts but also to reciprocate them in the exam. My patience with students and my…

This helps the tutor guide the step-by step to improve their understanding of each topic. Another important thing is patience because learning takes time, and it a calm and encouraging…

This will also…

Every student is different, and I think the most important thing a tutor can do is recognise that and adapt accordingly. Megan, Hadfield

Inside HadfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Oliver worked on drawing linear graphs, understanding gradient, and the y = mx + b form, using clear step-by-step examples.

In Year 10, Oliver focused on solving simultaneous linear equations with the elimination method and reviewed circle geometry including area calculations.

For Year 5, Myki practised multiplication and factors through revision activities and extended this to cover fractions, division, highest common factor, and lowest multiple.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often preferred to solve algebraic equations mentally and skipped writing out steps, as one tutor noted: "He likes to solve equations in his head. He needs to write how he solved the problems." This habit made it harder to catch sign errors or understand where confusion started, especially with negatives and indices.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student's messy hand counting for subtraction sometimes led to miscounts—extra time was spent correcting basic errors rather than building new skills.

In Year 10 probability, not reading written questions closely left key parts unanswered and confidence dropped after each unclear result.

Recent Achievements

One Hadfield tutor recently noticed a big change with Oliver in Year 9 maths: after struggling to make sense of linear equations, he's now confidently graphing lines using the y = mx + b formula and even tackled substitution methods without hesitation.

In another session, a Year 11 student who previously froze on probability questions was able to tackle class problems independently after working through both experimental and theoretical probability with support.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to make frequent mistakes when hand counting has started getting through addition and subtraction columns accurately—last week he finished all ten problems without any errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Thomas More's School.
