I am good at breaking down work into small, understandable chunks, and explaining concepts step by step for maximal understanding of a concept rather than rote…

A tutor can encourage student so that they can boost their confident to do the things and make them understand things from their point of view so that they remember lessons for long time. Similarly, a tutor can help students to improve attitude towards learning that students no longer feel overwhelm or frustrated towards it. I think my strengths…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

Meanwhile, the tutor should make sure the student won's lost their interest's in study. My strength as a tutor is that I am patient and friendly. As I was a student before I know that study is hard and it is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them not just what to think, but how to think. Its about providing them with strategies to find their own answers. I believe the most powerful way a tutor can aid a student is by giving them confidence. More than often, students can show more vulnerability in a one-on-one session than in a classroom surrounded by their peers, and so the best thing I can do is use these private sessions to impart confidence in the students by making them see ways they can…

Inspire students to understand the importance and broader concepts within mathematics. Inside HawthorndeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie focused on multiplication and division strategies, also practising worded problem solving using real-life money scenarios.

In Year 8, Sam worked through trigonometric equations and explored circular geometry concepts, using diagrams to visualise angle relationships within a circle.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe reviewed applications of integration in calculus and tackled magnetic induction problems relevant to senior physics coursework.

Recent Challenges

Several senior students, such as those in Year 11 and 12 Physics and Methods, had not completed enough independent revision between sessions—one tutor observed, "Hadn't done much revision between our last two sessions so needs to get plenty done before his two tests."

In a recent proof-writing task for Year 10 Maths, missing the first steps led to confusion about which equations to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled to remember how she solved time conversion problems from one week to the next; retention faltered without consistent practice. This left her unsure during homework and slower when new questions appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Hawthorndene tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now openly explaining their approach to tricky maths problems, showing new willingness to talk through their thinking.

In Year 11 physics, a student made excellent progress with magnetic induction—after struggling last term, he's now able to explain core concepts without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once guessed at time questions is now taking her time to check which operation is needed before answering, and finished her last session by correctly solving all time problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorndene Primary School.
