I believe that it is important for a tutor to be someone that can be there for a student when they need help emotionally, as well as academically. For many, being there for someone emotionally can be as simple as not knowing about their personal lives and just being there purely to help, while some students, I have found, need to talk about…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to develop the student's critical thinking skills so that when they continue to study or whatever they want to achieve in life, they have the skills to keep learning and teaching themselves. A tutor must not only give a student the confidence and encouragement needed to learn properly, but…

Not get angry when students ask questions, no matter how stupid it may be. Never make the students feel their questions are stupid. Make sure you answer and clear what is in their mind. Teach them how to face math problems. I am patient. I don't get angry or offended easily. I take time to understand myself very well and figure out the best easy…

A tutor’s role goes beyond just teaching concepts; it’s about building a student’s confidence and fostering a love for learning. The most important things a tutor can do are to be patient, provide clear explanations, and adapt teaching methods to suit the student’s learning style. Be patient with students, understand their concept-grasping power (since it differs from student to student), provide special attention to slow-learners, appreciate students (when they get the hang of things or score good marks) and motivate students (when they make mistakes)! I love making complex concepts simplified (easy-to-understand), am…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping the student believe in themselves and letting them know they can do well. This is because most of the time students self doubts leads to them struggling with content not a lack of ability. I create strategies to help my students remember content easier and I make sure that I…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do is create a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking as many questions as they need. Also, it's crucial to let them know that making mistakes is a natural part of learning. A tutor should also offer encouragement and support to help students build their confidence…

I think a tutor needs to be able to create that working relationship with a student, to show them how fun learning can be. When shown how interesting these things can be, students become much more motivated to engage and learn, and the 1-on-1 support that tutoring provides gives these children the tools they need to excel. I have 18 months of…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a positive learning environment. A tutor shouldn’t just give answers but should guide students through the thinking process so they can solve problems on their own. One of my main strength is patience. I understand that…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build a supportive and safe environment where the students find it comfortable asking questions. A tutor should adapt their teaching skills to each student, let him/her make mistakes and then learn from them. It also important to help the child develop good study habits as independent…

I think the most important thing is helping the student build confidence and understand the basics properly. Once that's in place, everything else becomes easier. A tutor should also be supportive and consistent, so the student feels comfortable and keeps improving over time. I am good at explaining things in a simple way and adapting depending on…

I think it is to create a supportive environment where a student can feel comfortable making mistakes and asking questions, all the while improving in each step. My biggest strength is breaking difficult concepts into smaller steps. I try to explain why we do each step rather than just memorising formulas without understanding them. Once students…

Mostly, I think it's important to be consistent in class attendance to make max use out of the limited time period. I also think that always believing in the student makes a huge difference, especially in maths. They need to know that someone sees their capability apart from them. Adding patience to this and allowing them a safe space to make…

I believe that it is important to help students to understand how academic skills can lead them to their goals, and to encourage them to work hard, doing their best to make the most of opportunities that come to them. Supporting students through a stressful period of their life is one of the most important roles of a tutor, you need to be there mentor but especially their friend. It's important to build the students confidence by giving them the tools to understand complex problems rather than by giving them the answers. I am friendly and approachable, and can…

Local Reviews

My son can't wait to have his maths lessons with his tutor every week! She is helping him learn through wonderful and fun ways!
Konstantina, Preston

Inside Heidelberg WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia focused on factorising algebraic expressions and substitution in more complex equations to build confidence with foundational algebra skills.

In Year 9, Jacob practised graphing parabolas as well as substituting values into quadratic functions, using worked examples for clarity.

For Year 10, Sam concentrated on solving linear equations and revisited core trigonometric ratios—sine, cosine, and tangent to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often forgot to bring her maths textbook, which meant gaps in reviewing problem areas and "she needed to bring her maths books so I could see what she had struggled with this week."

In a senior class, one student ran out of time during an exam; as the tutor put it, "he missed some simple errors" because he didn't check answers before submitting.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student's algebra work was messy and hard to follow—incorrect values crept in when calculations weren't clearly laid out.

Distraction in English led another student to guess answers without reading passages closely.

Recent Achievements

One Heidelberg West tutor noticed Kiera now tackles more complex maths problems without hesitation—just weeks ago she'd often wait for reassurance before starting.

In Year 8, Ollie moved from making frequent mistakes in timed tests to using a standard formula they developed together for negative indices, helping him answer these questions independently and with fewer errors.

Meanwhile, Felix in primary school has shifted from being distracted during class to focusing well enough to score 8/8 on his fractions test after struggling with this topic earlier; he completed all the questions accurately on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Pius X School.
