A tutor should be able to build confidence for a student in a subject that is not their strongest. By building this confidence, students can go into exams with a clear understanding of the subject. For the student’s future, the confidence from succeeding in a subject can flow into other aspects of their lives, allowing them to help others. I am…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are: 1) provide clarity, 2) build confidence, and 3) foster independent thinking. A good tutor doesn't just help students get the right answers, they help students understand the process and develop the skills to tackle future challenges on their own. Encouraging students to ask questions, think…

The most important thing a tutor can do is instill a growth mindset. I believe before you start to learn anything a growth mindset is highly essential. I do that my firstly making sure that I build a good relationship with my student, because students don’t learn from a teacher they don’t like. I then try to understand students strengths and…

A good tutor can change the student's mindset and make them better people. Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

For me, as a student, what I sought from my tutor was discovering how I learn best, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach. I also valued having someone with whom I could freely share my thoughts without fear of judgment, essentially a friend. Intuitive( I can understand and know when a topic boring and making it fun or finding a…

Being patient with a student has to be the most important. Learning isn’t the same for everyone and some areas of learning are harder for some people. Above all else, I believe a tutor should prioritise student wellbeing. Beyond academic achievement, it's essential to foster a sense of belonging, confidence and self-worth in each student. This involves attentive listening, emotional support, and creating a safe, judgement-free space. Additionally, empowering students to take ownership of their…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

Inside HerdsmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ava worked on multiplying and dividing fractions, along with strategies for solving worded problems involving measurement.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and expanded brackets using step-by-step written methods.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lily explored trigonometry basics and practiced applying sine and cosine rules to solve right-angled triangle questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student's algebra progress was slowed by inconsistent homework completion—"failed to complete all homework questions," one note recorded.

In Year 10, careless handling of negative signs in calculations led to repeated errors; as observed, "details, careless mistakes" meant that time was spent fixing issues rather than moving forward with new concepts.

For a Year 7 student working on linear graphs, unclear written work and skipping question details made extracting the required information difficult, which disrupted understanding.

Meanwhile, in upper primary maths, forgotten multiplication tables left one student hunting for answers instead of building fluency.

Recent Achievements

One Herdsman tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to skip steps now carefully reads each question before starting calculations, leading to fewer careless mistakes in statistics problems.

In Year 8, another student has started bringing completed homework every session and recently tackled balancing equations without prompting—she'd previously needed reminders just to start.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with her 8 and 9 times tables last term can now recall them quickly and managed all the related questions without any hesitation during the lesson.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cambridge Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chrysalis Montessori School.
