The most important thing that a tutor can do is positively and kindly assist the student in learning new things and help them understand their work. In doing this, a tutor is giving the student tools for future success in life and helping them grow and develop in a positive manner. I believe that my good communication skills and patience will…

The knowledge and the ability to design lessons, lesson activities, practical tasks and weekly tests are important aspects of successful tutoring. For instance, breaking down complex…

I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. This is important because I have met many students who are under the assumption…

Equip them with the ability to eventually solve problems independently. At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. Also, I try to foster enthusiasm in the subjects being taught, so students can…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

Enhance students' confidence in their academic ability and empower them to achieve their dreams. A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. When students grasp the concept of the subject ,they are less likely to forget it…

Just supporting them through questions and providing hints allowing them to figure out the problem by themselves. I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

Academically, I want to be able to build a student's confidence in their mastery of the subject, and familiarize the students with questions that may come up in an exam. This is done as I'll get to know the student and create a positive, engaging study atmosphere during the session. Non-academically, I want to help students make studying and their…

Being willing to help, but also acknowledge the rare instances where a tutor may be unable to help to a confident level. For me the most important aspect of being a tutor is that I must be able to maintain my students motivation. Somewhat like a personal trainer. Secondly a tutor must be able to explain concepts and ideas on the…

Inside HighettTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Liam worked on algebra basics and worded questions, using step-by-step examples to strengthen his problem-solving approach.

For Year 10, Jasmine practised expanding and factorising quadratic expressions and revisited linear equations through homework review.

Meanwhile, in VCE Physics (Year 12), Alex prepared for SAC 1 by applying key concepts from motion and forces, focusing on calculations relevant to assessment requirements.

Recent Challenges

For a Year 10 student, he needs to improve his answer layout—how he writes answers on paper, as one tutor observed; unclear working made reviewing linear equations much harder.

In Year 11 Science, missing key notes and not summarizing lessons left gaps before assessments.

One Year 8 student relied on quick mental shortcuts in algebra but skipped writing steps, leading to lost marks when sign errors appeared.

A Year 4 learner often forgot their maths book at home, so practice with time-telling was inconsistent—confidence dipped each time progress stalled mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Highett tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip over worded maths problems now taking the time to highlight key details and draw diagrams before solving, which led him to finish several expansion and factorisation questions without any errors.

In another session, a Year 9 student who was hesitant about trigonometry started identifying patterns in angle problems on his own and applied rules from previous lessons with much more independence.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student made a clear leap by remembering both o'clock and half-past positions when telling time and even corrected herself mid-task when counting by fives.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Highett Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Moorabbin Primary School.
