Expanding on what I have written earlier, I think that one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be prepared, and always willing to learn. I think this requires being a bit humble, and accepting that, even with something that may appear to be far below the tutor's learning, there may still be things that aren't known or have…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

I believe that the most important thing as a tutor is to listen to each individual student's needs and adjust my techniques and approaches of teaching to meet the learning styles of the student. I should go into every session with an open and flexible stance, with the ultimate goal providing support for my student in whatever way it is that they…

I feel a tutor must be able to invoke a sense of interest and joy in a students minds for the subject they teach. As a tutor, you are someone who has studied the subject beforehand and are more knowledgeable about the subject than a student who is just starting out. This makes it difficult for tutors to reach their maximum potential while teaching…

From personal experience, I have had a few unfair and unsatisfactory experiences with tutors throughout my schooling journey. As a result, I have learnt from those experiences and structured my services in regards to having the student as the main focus. As a tutor, the most important thing I can do is explain and walk a student through unfamiliar…

The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. I provide examples to clarify concepts, and I'm willing to explain the same material multiple times until my students…

I think that a tutor must be patient and remain composed with each student. A tutor is meant to be that person whose teaching is tailored, so it requires an individualized approach, picked up and constantly adjusted as needs change and develop. I have (as told to me by all my ever-suffering associates) a 'wild' vocabulary, and for English…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Students already have bounds of pressure heaped on them, academic, parental, administrative, personal, etc. and sometimes all it takes is one Calculus question to bring them to their wit's end. A tutor must support their students throughout their learning journey and…

By tailoring teaching strategies to individual needs, a tutor can instill a passion for…

I realize tutoring is not just about being a private teacher who delivers knowledge outside of school. It is also about being a mentor, a facilitator, a friend who can help learners grow and develop good habits in order to have the best performance in learning. Besides, the tutor is the one who understand the student' strengths and weaknesses in…

From my experience, one of the most important thing I can do is finding out the weakness of students and helping them overcome that weakness instead of letting them away from it. Tutors should be honest, too when there is the question that we do not know. Last but not least, tutors should help students build confidence and give support as much as…

Make the student feel safe is number one and to inspire a love for learning is the goal! A tutor should display patience, kindness, and develop a relationship with the student; as well as personalised learning. Inside HighgateTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Stefan worked on connecting fractions, decimals, and percentages using visual models, then applied these concepts to simple financial problems.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic expressions—expanding and factorising them—and also reviewed linear equations with practice questions from her assignment sheet.

For Year 9, Jay focused on trigonometric ratios through targeted practice exercises and reinforced his understanding of Pythagoras' theorem by solving a range of geometry word problems.

Recent Challenges

Several students showed clear process challenges this week.

In Year 8 Maths, one student was "forgetting a lot of the stuff" covered in earlier lessons, so new material couldn't build smoothly on past concepts.

A Year 9 learner mixed up steps with adding and subtracting integers; after more guided examples and memory tips, confidence returned, but independent retention still needs work.

At senior level, revision focused mostly on previously mastered questions rather than unfamiliar problems—limiting progress before upcoming tests.

Homework completion also varied: extra tasks were set for two students who hadn't kept up with assigned practice from prior weeks.

Recent Achievements

One Highgate tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to skip over tricky algebra questions now working through each step out loud, asking for hints only after trying his own approach first.

In Year 12 maths, another student came in with several mistakes from her last probability test; this time, she brought her marked paper and corrected every error herself during the session—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was hesitant about homework started arriving with completed worksheets and specific questions about what confused him most.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fullarton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Highgate School.
