A tutor must always be very patient since each student is different and should be handled with care. Furthermore, there is no hard and fast rule in education, so a tutor should be open to learning and improving themselves. Listening to and observing students is also an essential quality for a tutor. I am a highly efficient problem solver, and I…

For me, the most important thing that a tutor can do is to develop students' confidence and ability in their studies. By working with a student personally by meeting them where they are at in their abilities, a student's academic confidence can grow as they are able to focus on areas of their work that they specifically struggle with. I think this…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be adaptable and acknowledge that there isn't one learning style that fits every student. A good prospective tutor should be able to explain problems/concepts from various vantage points and have the ability to communicate information clearly and concisely to their students using a…

As stated in my strengths, taking the time to understand how the student learns. Throwing solutions at someone won't help if you do not provide an explanation they can understand. I believe as well as this, building a decent relationship with the student is important, no one wants to learn from someone they dislike, so being friendly and genuinely…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are providing personalised support tailored to their individual needs, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment, and instilling confidence in their abilities. By offering personalised support, you can address the specific challenges and goals of each student,…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to adapt to individual learning needs, as tutors need to recognise that every student learns differently and they have to be flexible with teaching methods. The second thing is to foster self-confidence, as it's crucial to help students recognise their improvement, which…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be their friends and always listen to them when they have something to tell. If the students are having trouble, we can counsel them or give them advice so they can figure something out. Being friends with the students not only will make us get near them, it can also make them feel ease…

Supporting them is very important. I think there's no point or there's little impact to the student when the tutor doesn't support them in a way they need. Some students don't need much support but some students might need more help than others and having more work load on top of school with not much support is demotivating. I would say my…

I believe that above all else, a tutor needs to make students feel comfortable with their materials. Once the students are confident in themselves, most problems can usually be overcome by the students without help. I think my greatest strength as a tutor is being able to help students simplify and break down problems into more digestible…

I'd say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel more confident in their ability to learn a lot of the time. Because they may feel as though a topic is beyond them but once broken down in ways that they already understand it benefits them wholly not just as a student but as a person in general. My strengths as a…

Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

Personally, I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Since learning can be challenging, tutors should be willing to explain the concepts to students multiple times and provide ample time for practice and understanding. First of all, I am capable to adapt my teaching style to different students. Furthermore,…

Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
