A tutor should be able to encourage and inspire confidence from students in troubling subject areas, as this acts as a key determinant of a students willingness to persevere and excel in a subject. I am able to connect with students and encourage them to remain perseverant through uprising confidence within a…

I believe motivating the students to feel confident in the subject and their ability to answer the questions and tasks to their best standard is the most important thing. We are a source of knowledge but our job is to give the students the tools to success rather than answer their work for them. As a tutor, I am highly organised and have an…

I believe that the most important thing for a tutor is to provide a comfortable environment for their students. It's incredibly stressful to do additional tutoring outside of school, so as a tutor, it is my job to ensure that they are content with how the lessons are progressing. I think a tutor should be more of a companion, someone who…

I'd say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is making them feel more confident in their ability to learn a lot of the time. Because they may feel as though a topic is beyond them but once broken down in ways that they already understand it benefits them wholly not just as a student but as a person in general. My strengths as a…

A tutor must always be very patient since each student is different and should be handled with care. Furthermore, there is no hard and fast rule in education, so a tutor should be open to learning and improving themselves. Listening to and observing students is also an essential quality for a tutor. I am a highly efficient problem solver, and I…

As stated in my strengths, taking the time to understand how the student learns. Throwing solutions at someone won't help if you do not provide an explanation they can understand. I believe as well as this, building a decent relationship with the student is important, no one wants to learn from someone they dislike, so being friendly and genuinely…

I consider motivation and fostering a growth mindset to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student. A tutor should be able to inspire students to achieve excellence in their respective fields and create that growth mindset that will help them in their future. My academic grades are my greatest strength as I have achieved top results…

When I was a student, the most important thing a tutor could do for me was offer me revision resources and previous exams since these provided the best source of practise. However, another important thing that tutors can offer is patience. When teaching, one must be respectful and patient and understand that not all students learn at the same pace…

One of the most important values a tutor can have is patience in order to foster an environment where the student is not afraid to ask questions or for an explanation of a topic. It is also important that the tutor is able to instill clear thinking and practice for a student in order to be able to solve concepts and understand them on their own. I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make lessons as fun as possible. This could be done by varying the tutoring techniques (verbal, written, fun quizzes, etc) to keep students interested whilst delivering a clear and concise lesson as I believe that students will receive the most benefit while being motivated. A tutor must…

A tutor should adapt their teaching to cater for the student's needs. There is no point in teaching something the same way a thousand times with no response, so a tutor should be able to quickly shift tactics to better suit the student. I believe a tutor should also have great deal of patience as it can be immensely difficult leaning new…

A tutor should be able to engage the student in the subject as much as possible, whilst explaining the big ideas behind what they are doing. This, i believe, will help students not only understand but also love the subject and get interested in it, which in turn will promote more engagement from their side and hence increase their grades. I think…

Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
