One of the most important values a tutor can have is patience in order to foster an environment where the student is not afraid to ask questions or for an explanation of a topic. It is also important that the tutor is able to instill clear thinking and practice for a student in order to be able to solve concepts and understand them on their own. I…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for a student is to be supportive and continue to persevere to find a way in which he student can engage in the selected subject. I believe when a child receives encouragement and that support they themselves build confidence in them selves which I find assists in the learning process. I am a very…

A tutor should be able to engage the student in the subject as much as possible, whilst explaining the big ideas behind what they are doing. This, i believe, will help students not only understand but also love the subject and get interested in it, which in turn will promote more engagement from their side and hence increase their grades. I think…

I think helping students get interested in a subject is the most critical factor in tutoring. I think learning is based on interest. So academic performance is important, but interest is the most important thing for children. I think I have a good ability to preview my homework. I think it is the teacher's responsibility to explain it to the…

A tutor should adapt their teaching to cater for the student's needs. There is no point in teaching something the same way a thousand times with no response, so a tutor should be able to quickly shift tactics to better suit the student. I believe a tutor should also have great deal of patience as it can be immensely difficult leaning new…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make lessons as fun as possible. This could be done by varying the tutoring techniques (verbal, written, fun quizzes, etc) to keep students interested whilst delivering a clear and concise lesson as I believe that students will receive the most benefit while being motivated. A tutor must…

I believe we as tutors need to understand the student's situation, why they are stuck in a problem or why are they particularly struggling with a topic. Only then, we can try to help them grow and improve step by step along the way. Although I might not have that much experience teaching in a formal tutoring session, I hope I could make students…

Being supportive and encouraging is very important. Letting people make mistake and help them to learn off it are some things that I consider crucial in the learning process. I perceive strong communication skills, high level of patience and sound receptive skills are very important in the role of a tutor. I showed the ability to adapt to my students’ needs. Especially when I had a student who experienced difficulties with the English language and topics covered in the 9th grade. I explained the material in a…

I think the most important a tutor can do for student is to support and encourage them mentally. Sometimes they might feel disappointed in themselves because of the marks or because they do not understand certain concept, so it is important for a tutor to teach them in a way that they feel comfortable and encourage them. So I think the tutor…

I believe all students learn at different levels and a tutor can help them realise their potential. Students often hear about the potential they have and feel like they haven't got what it takes, a tutor can empower them and boost their confidence to take step towards their big goals. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping with their confidence. What many people struggle with the most in exams is their confidence. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to offer fresh perspectives on the things being taught in school. I firmly believe that individuals learn and think in diverse ways. Much like solving a problem can involve various methods leading to the same solution, students may grasp knowledge more effectively through one…

Being patient with the student when introducing new ideas. It can be difficult to grasp new ideas when first introduced, and it is vital to the student's learning that they understand and are confident with the basic concepts before building on these concepts. Inside HillsdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Arden focused on algebraic expressions and manipulating numbers with surds, as well as interpreting functions and graphs in preparation for her upcoming exam.

In Year 11, Michael worked through first principles of calculus, including finding tangents to curves, and applied the chain rule and product rule using targeted practice questions.

For Year 12, Olivia revised advanced differentiation techniques such as the quotient rule and related rates, alongside sequences and series problems drawn from past trial exams.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 11 Maths session, one student hesitated to attempt Level 3 questions unless prompted, leading to missed opportunities for deeper understanding.

Another, in Year 10 Science, understood content but struggled with scientific terminology—"she should pay more attention on the meaning of the terms," noted a tutor—which slowed progress in written explanations.

Exam timing repeatedly challenged a senior student: extra minutes were spent recalling formulas under pressure instead of answering more questions.

In Year 7–8 algebra and geometry work, untidy working sometimes made it difficult to trace errors, causing confusion during revision and wasting valuable lesson time retracing steps.

Recent Achievements

One Hillsdale tutor recently noticed Lucy, a Year 12 student, is no longer hesitating with challenging differentiation problems—she now solves them independently after struggling to get started just weeks ago.

Ruby, also in high school, used to avoid tricky algebraic extensions but is now choosing harder questions herself and applying calculus techniques without prompting.

Meanwhile, Selena in primary years had difficulty spotting number patterns; last session she quickly identified a complex pattern rule on her own and converted between 12-hour and 24-hour time accurately.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Public School.
